Adapter for separated or joined mic and speaker plugs in headset or earphone

Hi all, I need help in looking for the right term for this (or even better the right item from ebay or other stores).
Some laptops have a combined (single) mic and speakers jack/port similar to the one in mobile phones. Some headsets also have a single plug combining both mic and speakers, but some have dual plugs, one for the mic and one for the speakers. If I have a headset with dual plugs and a laptop with single plug, then I need some sort of adapter to be able to use them together.
Does anyone know the common term for that particular adapter (if there is any)?

  • The description for this sounds about right I think (edit:pun unintended). http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5mm-stereo-TRRS-audio-male-to-Earphone-headset-microphone-adapter-PC-iphone-/161240379838

Item Description: 4-position 3.5mm to dual 3-position 3.5mm headset splitter adapter features one 3.5mm male plug and two 3.5mm female connectors, allowing you to add a mono microphone input as well as a stereo output to your PC or Laptop, through a single 3.5mm audio port. While some of the newer laptops from AppleĀ® and DellĀ® feature only a single (4-position) 3.5mm audio port that supports both audio input and output, this innovative headset splitter adapter breaks the audio port out into two distinct ports - one that can be used for a microphone connection, and the other for connecting external speakers.

Though the seller feedback rating would have been nice if it was higher than 98.9%. I can't find many eBay listings. I used search terms "3.5mm adapter headset microphone". There are a couple of similar white ones from different sellers but with slightly lower seller rating of 98.7%

    • Thanks ScaryZombie. It seems that there is no specific term/word to call the adapter.
I am also interested in the reverse adapter.
Have you ever seen them in any store (JB, DSE, etc)?

      • I wouldn't have a clue sorry, I do most of my shopping online. By reverse do you mean the listing slightly below the other item on eBay. Something like this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/iPhone-Headset-to-PC-Laptop-Speaker-Mic-3-5mm-Adapter-/400455464617. Can't figure out what the correct term is, but seems strange that converting in one direction costs $2, but in the reverse is $4.

LOL, I just noticed, is that why they're called One Direction, because their music and sound just goes in one ear and out the other. Aww, just googled it up, they're named that since they had common goals…I prefer my reasoning.

        • Yes, that is what I mean by 'reverse'. It is a different seller than the single-to-dual one, so that may explain the price difference.
