Looking for Safety Deposit Boxes/ Lockers/ Safe box in Perth

Hi people,

I am looking for a safe deposit lock box, infact i had gone personally to banks in the CBD today and asked about the safes and all they could answer was NO NOT AVAILABLE, and some of the banks told me that customers have accounts (safe boxes) since 20-30 years. So they are not sure when the boxes will be available.

So i tried calling bank toll 1300 numbers and asked them about the same, they told me that the safes might be taken but i can bring my own lock box and put my valuable things in the box and keep in the bank. My question is

1) Where do i get those lock boxes /safes
2) Is there an insurance from the bank on those boxes which i get on my own? - or should i buy content insurance seperately
3) Does any one of you already have safes /lockers in Perth banks and would recommend me any of them, as i am confused with all these banks and their dimensions sizes and no of access available and prices.

Thanks

  • It may be cheaper to just buy a safe and put it in your place of residence, if possible.

A well-hidden/secure safe will be free to maintain and obviously quite secure. I'd rather do that with the added convenience of not having to go to the bank than to pay fees and have to go there just to get my own things out.

Unless it's a large amount of cash.. which you'd probably want to deposit anyway into an account to earn interest + it's safer.

In answer to (1), banks will usually accept any portable, lockable container of a suitable size. Depending on what it is you are storing, this could be a small briefcase (suitable for valuable documents and smaller trinkets), or a metal cashbox (eg. http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/search/cashbox), for more substantial items. Most stationers sell cashboxes - they are commonly used by small businesses.

The container doesn't need to be an actual 'safe' - it will be stored inside a much bigger, more secure safe that provides all of the necessary security and fire-proofness.
