Best 4TB NAS drive

Hi guys. I'm looking to buy the Synology DS413J and I was wondering what everyone's opinion of the WD 4TB Red and the Seagate 4TB NAS? Which is better? Have any of you guys had problems with one or the other? I don't intend to use it in a RAID configuration.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Well, better late than never I guess…
Many (including myself) believe the Hitachi Coolspin drives are about the best at the moment, not strictly a nas-designed drive but many are using them for that purpose. I'm waiting for a deal so I can get 8 of them for my Synology DS1813+.

Toshiba are also good but only have 7200rpm in 4TB. When WD took over Hitachi they were forced to sell some of their process to Toshiba so now they have good drives too.

WD has been my favourite for years but I think Hitachi are superior for now. And Seagate, well not my cup of tea but provided you don't buy 3TB drives maybe you'll be fine.

B&H had Coolspins for $150 USD recently but I missed it. That's my trigger point, currently $180 USD on both Amazon and B&H.

If that doesn't suit you, a number of 6TB drives are now available - WD Green is the cheapest currently ($270 USD) with others around $300 USD.

Lastly, there are now a few 5TB drives too, formerly just externals, WD now have Red/Greens in that size but price points aren't impressive. 4TB or 6TB is the way to go, then decide on make & model.

    Hope this helps!

  • You are going to want enterprise grade hard drives for NAS's.
    Seagate Constellation
    WD Reds
    Hitachi Deskstar NAS etc..

While WD Greens are cheap, they are not built to do well over time from the constant 24/7 thrashing that an NAS does on hard drives.
