Is screen failure on laptop a statutory warranty claim (18 months old)

My laptop began to flicker a little on top of screen a couple weeks ago. It then progressed last week to a pink tinge on top of screen and now the screen seems unresponsive. It connects fine to an external monitor (via hdmi).

Went to a local computer shop and they quoted about $180 to fix if screen replacement is necessary.

Do you think I could claim via statutory warranty?

Afaik, HP laptops have a 1 year warranty, sadly it’s about 18 months old.

Edit: actually its about 21 months old (bought in June 2012)

  • Just ask them…

  • did you buy it with a credit card that gives extended warranty?

  • normally physical damage on laptop screen is not covered in practice. However you can still try to ask.

The price you got quote is in the reasonable range. but just ensure the screen is fully compatible… otherwise it will be trouble.

    • No physical damage occurred, the screen just began showing screen failure symptoms on its own.

Just an update if anyone has similar experience, after sending in a few videos and trying some troubleshooting without success they have ordered a courier to pick up and should be repaired within 7 bds.

The agent said a fault within 2 years of purchase will fall under statutory warranty.

      • i had a HP that has a flickering screen whenever i moved it at the 18 month mark

however it had a 3yr warranty

that to me sounds like a cable

the guy came and replaced the screen cable back cover… everything in the screen inc. webcam

it was good as i had scratched up the back cover

the problem will be convincing the robot on the other end that AU law > HP warranty

  • Under Australia consumer law the item is suppose to have a working life of what is thought to be an reasonable amount of time. Personally I believe laptops should last at least 4 years, depending on the cost of the laptop of course. I have had Toshiba fix my laptop multiple times while out of the manufacture warranty due to Australia consumer law, hell white goods like fridges are expect to last almost 10 years.

  • Why not ring dept fair trading (ACCC) and ask them? The retailer is not going to do it happily, so go in armed (hopefully) knowing that you'll have back up if push comes to shove.

SHOULD you be able to expect it to last longer than 18 months? Absolutely! Can you walk in there and expect that it will be fixed under statutory warranty just because you ask for it? Not necessarily.
