New Tyres - Seem reasonable?

Ok, so seems tyres are a frustrating thing to replace. No-one wants to provide price easily, and there are a lot of rip off merchants out there.

For a 2008 Ford Focus, I've got a quote of $700 for 4 new Pirelli Cinturato P1 205/50/17, fitted, balanced & aligned. I've searched online and seems everyone likes the KU31's, but cannot seem to find them for a good price in Melbourne.

  1. Is this a decent tyre? Probably 50/50 between highway and city driving.
  2. Is this a decent price for 4 new, fitted, balanced, aligned tyres for what I've been told is a bit of an unusual size?

The tyres I've got are the originals on the car. 77,000km and they are noisy, bumpy ride, slippery in they wet and squeel like pigs around roundabouts. I'm hoping the new ones fix all this and provide a good ride for the next few years at least.

They're all doing 4 for 3 atm. Maybe you could try their Pirelli equivalent.
Might be top end and not in the promo though.

Or as a comparison try a CooperTyre

  • Didnt you get the Focus for its sportiness? What you described is as sporty as it can get. They say the bigger the rims, the less comfy the ride.

Before blaming the original tires tho, you should rethink how you took care of it, is it often kept at correct level of pressures or too high? Are tires wearing out evenly? Is it rotated at every oil change? Are the balancing magnets still on it or has fallen off? When was your last wheel alignment and tire balancing? Are there little rocks stuck between the threads? Hows the suspension doing? Whats the torque on wheel nuts? And thats just the surface of science behind the tires and wheels.

When you get new tires, you want to also check threadwear, traction and temperature ratings.

    Good luck!

Interesting post azn310, and to a point valid as I know (at least initially) the tyres weren't cared for like they should have been.

Got 4 x 225/45/17 Pirelli P1 cinturatos, fitted, balanced and aligned for $650. All in all pretty happy, had expected to pay $1000 as the stock tyres were 205/50/17 (apparently not a overly common size). Tyre factory in ferntree gully.

Can massively feel the difference - particularly with freeway driving. Very quiet, very light, very smooth.

    • Oh, TTF in FTG are an associated fitter for Ozzytyres (see post below).

  • 77k on the original tyres? They must be bald as a badger!!!

Check out www.ozzytyres.com.au for a decent price. You can have them delivered to wherever you are and then fit them yourself, or you can have them delivered to an associated fitter and deliver your car to them.

The size of the tyre and brand for $700 all 4 corners is a decent price. I drive a Mazda 3 MPS with 215/45/R18 tyres and if I can do all 4 for less than $1000 fitted it's more than a bargain. I also only get around 30-40k out of my tyres… that's what you get for a sport compound.

These are usually the cheapest in Aus for everything they sell.

I got 4 x Kumho KU39 (KU31 is very good too though) for $107 each, plus $45 for freight minus 3% for entering a forum code. Worked out to be $460 delivered to my door and $15ea for fitting and balancing locally made it $130 per tyre.

Exact same tyres from K-mart cost $195 fitted and they wouldn't budge on price, but I saved $65 per tyre and a total of $260.
