Withdrawal from ATM but no money came out

Hi there

What can i do in this situation?

i tried to make a withdrawal from a CBA atm this morning, and for some reason it did not dispense any money out but it did deduct the amount from my account.
After i entered the amount the machine made all the dispensing sounds and the slot opened, but no money came out, it ejected my card and gave me the receipt with the money deducted from my account balance. So I entered my card again and tried to withdraw $50 and that time it did dispense money.

Since its Saturday the bank was not open, i had to call up the banking help service and they said it will take up to 6 weeks for them to investigate it. Is there any way to speed this up or prove to the bank on monday that it did not dispense the money?

thanks

  • They have to examine the ATM logs. They'll know if there has been a malfunction. Sit tight it may not take 6 weeks.

No use going to the branch BTW, they have no control over the ATM and will refer you to the help desk anyway.

  • Same thing happened a while ago. Had to go into bank, fill out a form and wait for a credit on my account. Big PITA to be honest but what can you do.

    • What was the outcome?

Happened to me with ANZ. I told them that if the money was not back in my account by Monday, I would be taking my business elsewhere. I got the money back on the Monday. Then 4 weeks later, the money was credited to my account again. I called them and told them of their mistake and 2 days later the money was gone.

The most annoying thing about it was, after I used the ATM, a lady sat in a cafe next to it said "It has been doing that to people all morning". Annoying because she didn't tell me before I used it, and because the bank had already had several complaints about this ATM that morning and they had not taken it offline.

  • Similar thing happened to me withdrew $40 and the machine only gave me $20. Went into the branch and informed the customer service person and they had a look at what she described as an overflow compartment and found my missing $20. This was a few years ago so not sure if still relevant with new machines but could be worth a try to avoid the six week wait.

Australian banks are some of the most profitable in the world. I imagine it'd take more time for them to investigate the issue than to pay the $50 (0.00000005%) out of their massive profits.

  • someone stole $700 from my account at an ATM, took a few weeks to get the money back.

  • That's why I always get money by cashout at Coles/Woolies. If I get out more than $200, I get 50c bonus too, courtesy of Wesfarmers/Woolworths ;)

    • I think that's the ING bonus?

Happened to me ages ago. Did a withdraw for $200, only $150 came out. Went in, filled in a form and was told to wait. I never got a response to what happened and never got the money back from CBA. I guess I wasn't persistent enough. You'll need to write yourself a memo to chase them as I seriously forgot after 2 months. I hope you get your money back. Good luck!!

  • Same thing happened to me.

I was at the ATM, and the money didn't come out. Then the receipt took a really long time to print…

The person behind me was all grumpy that I was standing at the ATM for so long.

I had a good laugh at the person afterwards, I waited for the person to withdraw and nothing came out as well, except their receipt.

Why withdraws $50? I carry at least $500 on me at all times in 20's and 100's. BALLA.

Because a true ozbargainer pays everything on credit for the rewards and free imsurances! Plus If you ever loose your wallet or it gets stolen. I'd rather lose $50 than $500…

If I want rewards I'll pay for them in 100s. And $500 is a trivial amount anyway.

          Prob just a troll….
Why you on ozbargain when you think $500 is trivial? go buy RRP troll…

Reminds me of a year ago, an ATM at a cinema in Newcastle that was dispensing $20 notes instead of $50's and vice versa. hehe! Good if you did a $60 withdrawal (=$150) Obviously someone stacked $20 notes and $50 notes into the wrong slots! Bank still has not contacted me for recovery! It was closed down by cinema staff when someone got $20 when they entered 50.

  • On which branch this happened?

  • This happened to me and my friend on separate occasions at CBA ATMs. Took nearly 2 months to get our balances re-adjusted correctly. Not only nuisance but who got the benefit during the 2 months!!
