Forgive my ignorance, but what does this do on the phone?

Is it something useful to have for a non techy person?

It's an SSH client so that you can ssh into a linux / unix / etc machine from your phone. I use it for my raspberry pi on the odd occasion.

So… If you do any of the above, then it's useful. If you don't know what it is, then it's probably not :)

      • I'm like johninmelb.

I've looked at the screenshots and still don't have a clue what it's used for :/

Hopefully I can shed some light…. (to those reading and wondering what is SSH?)..

As you know, computers have various operating systems they run to be actually usable, be it windows, mac os, linux (there are many flavours of linux). You also have an operating system on your smart phone (ios, android etc)..

Generally speaking modern operating systems are graphical based (GUI) meaning you can control it using a keyboard and mouse to point and click to make the computer do your evil bidding…

However there are some operating systems that offer a console mode in addition to a GUI (bit like the DOS prompt under Windows). Where console based programs on windows is rather rare these days, on linux based systems its still quite common..

Why on earth would you use a text based system?

Glad you asked. There are some instances where a text based interface system has benefits over a graphically based system. While this is not intended to be a detailed overview, the use of text based consoles means significantly less bandwidth to transit over the internet when accessing, faster access to commands, ability to pipe the output of one command to another, and lower cpu usage by not having the OS have to maintain a gui…

To connect to a windows system remotely one could use RDP, enter your username, password and off you go… To connect to a linux console based shell (like a DOS prompt) you SSH (which means Secure Shell because its encrypted to prevent spying/interception over the internet).

As an example, lets say I wanted to restart a web engine running on a server remotely… On windows I can use putty or on my tablet Juice SSH.

I enter my username, password and I am presented with a shell prompt :

          Username: root
          password: **********

          root@dev:~#

I can now type commands remotely such telling my web server to restart..

          root@dev:~# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
          [ ok ] Restarting web server: apache2 … waiting .

Hopefully this hasn't glazed anyone's eyes over :)… As you can see with only a single line I can restart a service which trying to do remotely on a windows server would take slightly longer (and use more bandwidth)….

As airzone mentioned, if you don't know what it is, it's probably not for you :) and most of the general population will never be exposed to the joys of SSH'ing….

Hopefully this has shed some light on what this mysterious SSH is :)

One important feature Pro feature adds to JuiceSSH is tunneling, which allows you do some simple VPN task over encrypted channel. For example proxy over to your home NAS over open WiFi.

  • thanks op. actually one of the better ssh programs out there. uninstalled my others now. cheers

  • Thank you.

Is there a better way to get the email addresses of Linux professionals then to offer them for free a good ssh program? Well I do not care, free app… weeeee :).

  • Great app, use all the time, thanks OP!

  • Entered address and the information said…. "You will receive an email with your upgrade instructions in the next 2-8 hours" (not 2-48) as OP indicated. Maybe things changed.
