MacBook Air: 128GB Vs 256GB

Hi all.

Dick Smith currently have macs at 10% off, so I'm planning on picking one up for uni. I was interested in the storage options however. Honestly, 128gb sounds adequate to me, as I won't be using the computer for media storage. However, as we all know you don't get the full 128gb with the OS and other bits factored in. So I just wanted to ask owners if that got the 128gb if they have found it to be restrictive at all? Cheers.

I have a 128gb and its plenty for a final year uni student.

Use a external 1tb hard drive for holding movies, tv shows, music etc.

    It is plenty.

    • I assumed as much. I've got an external 1tb should I need it.

  • You'd be fine unless you like to store a lot of videos and music on it. Then again you can always use an sd card or usb drive.

  • If it going to be used solely for the uni purposes, then 128GB is fine.

  • Young mate, 128 gb is plentiful. Just enjoy it while it lasts ;)

  • 128gb will be heaps, Ive also got one for uni loaded with Office, AutoCAD, a large downloaded Spotify Library, Synced Dropbox of about 5gb and etc. Still have around 70gb of free space.

  • I agree that 128GB is definitely fine for most people. However make sure you get the 13"! the 11 is just not practical

    • You sir, just pre-empted my next question. Was tossing up which size to get. Considering the Airs are frickin tiny as is, I might as well get the larger screen. I've briefly used an 11 inch at work, and it was good enough but not sure how it would go in the long haul.

      • Whoops,reply below

  • A few of my friends have 11" airs and they can barely manage a word document on their screen. Unless you were just doing very very basic typing then I doubt this would be big enough. You can always go into a store and have a play around with it as much as you can, to see how well everyday things you use would fit in, but I would pretty much always recommend the 13".

    Other factors:
    - 13" has a longer battery life
    - SD card slot, necessary for you?
    - keyboards (at least use to be) different sizes, so harder to type on 11"

ROFL. 128GB is a few years behind. You want at least 500GB, of course buying Apple adding one in is impossible and if there is a 500GB option it likely costs $2K, instead of $370 or so for a decent Samsung model.

Why does he want 500GB? 128GB is proven to be more than enough for a lot people.

    • For real man? Elitist much, "few years behind". What if he doesn't even need that much space on an SSD drive.

  • I would be fine with 128GB if I didn't need to use Virtual machines. Consider 256GB if you are doing comp science.

And if 128GB starts being a little tight, get a 32GB Cruzer Fit or two.

  • There are lots of web storage solutions now as well. Google drive for example will now give you a TB of cloud storage for about $10. Can't remember if that's a year or monthly. Presume its monthly.
