Sydney to Tokyo via Hong Kong. Cheap flight suggestions?

Hi all.

I'm planning a return trip to Japan (probably Tokyo) and I want to stop off for a few days in Hong Kong on either the way over, or the way back, for business reasons.

Has anybody done this route, and if so do you have suggestions for flights, carriers etc?

Planning to go August, November, Jan-Feb or May. Are there sales that cover these times, or recommendations/warnings please about good times to travel.

Appreciate any advice.

Cathay Pacific perhaps?! It said in the T&C 'Stopovers: Permitted at Hong Kong in both directions.'

  • I did this same flight on Cathay in Oct last year. Stopover HK for a few days on the way back. Be mindful that it does cost a bit more if you want to stopover in HK and do shop around for the best offers.

  • Actually, I also think about travelling to Japan again and stopover in Hong Kong this time for a few nights. Early this year I went to Japan via Singapore and stay over for 4 nights with Singapore airline. I was very happy with Singapore airline, they services was great and great price. I want to fly Singapore airline again, but wondering if they stopover in Hong Kong? What Cathay Pacific service and price like?

    • Singapore Airlines don't do stopovers in Hong Kong as their hub is in Singapore. Cathay Pacific's hub is Hong Kong, hence why you will generally always have to stop in Hong Kong whenever you fly with them.

Cathay Pacific are a good airline - they are very popular with Hong Kongers, so the plane loads are generally good. I personally, have found them to be good, but sometimes inconsistent. The food, at times can be inedible - even in Business Class, and the service can range from fantastic to mediocre. They're still miles ahead of many of the American or European airlines though.

  • Thanks everybody. Cathay Pacific looks the way to go!

  • Actually, in case this helps anybody else. I'm planning the trip November-December this year.
Jetstar sale fares SYD - NRT currently around $365.
Southern China Airlines NRT - SYD $580 with a stopover in Guangzhou, and the train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong takes 2 hours and costs $27.
So, bit of a hassle but under $1000 return.

    • You may need a visa to go to China (i.e. extra cost).

    • Another thing you can try is find the cheapest SYD-HKG-SYD (probably Qantas). And buy HKG-NRT-HKG separately. There are many many flights between HKG and Japan: Japan Airlines, Cathay, ANA, Air China, Asiana(?), EVA (?) … (and others?) I assume it's a very competitive route, hence some cheap flights available between HK and Japan?
