Xbox 360 Halo 4 and Tomb Raider marked up at $0.01 at HN. Can I request it at this price?

Hey guys and gals. Just in Harvey Norman. Went over to the Xbox 360 part and saw a sealed halo 4 game with a tomb raider download attached to it in a sealed case marked up as $0.01

http://imgur.com/ELPaQ33

Took it to a guy who took it to the store manager who said they would honour the price of $58.

Am I in my right in requesting this price? As it was displayed? Or am I wrong in getting this deal because its obv a mistake?

Thanks all.

  • It's clearly marked at that price. I would have seen the store manager..

  • Had a similar experience some years ago at Target with a DVD, they had to honour the lower price sticker. Not sure what is the case with this one though, it does say something about it being a bundle.

  • It's clearly marked at that price, I would argue the point, you should have been entitled to it.

The gaming "manager" said they would do the 2 games for $58 as a good will gesture. Quick look on google shows they are selling halo for $30 and tomb raider for $29. Once I said this, they said they would honour the online prices. I said that wasn't much of a goodwill gesture. In the end gave up with arguing with them. Not worth the hassle.

If anyone is up for the argument, the whole back wall is littered with the halo 4 and tomb raider twin packs marked up at $0.01. I put other games over them and didn't tell them. if any Oz Bargainers wanna push harder then I did.

  • Oh. It's at Harvey Norman St Martins Village.

The reason it's like that is because it's a bundle supplied by Microsoft. Every September(ish) Microsoft creates a 'Holiday Bundle Value' deal with their 250GB consoles. One game is typically full retail and the second is a download voucher, previous years have seen combos like Forza 4/Skrim, Darksiders 2/Batman Arkham City and last year was Halo 4/ Tomb Raider.

So, since some stores will already have consoles there when the bundle "starts" Microsoft will sell them one of these bundles for $0.01 for every console that they have. This ensures all customers who buy a console at any retailer gets the extra games for free with their console, Harvey Norman sets the price at $0.01 too ensuring customers don't pay extra.

Now, that's why it is marked at $0.01, however Harvey Norman have made the mistake of actually marking it as for sale on the floor. These should either be kept out the back for console purchases or clearly marked as 'gift with purchase' and left with the consoles. However, they have no obligation to sell it to you at that price. What they must do is acknowledge the mistake and remove all copies of the game from the floor until the error has been fixed (otherwise it would be a 'bait and switch', but it isn't a 'bait and switch' until it's proven that is their direct intention.)

Hope this helps clear it up! I may be wrong on some things but this is all from working in games retail for the last 4 years (at a different retailer for what it's worth.)

    • Thanks for clearing it up for me. I understood it was a mistake, I was just looking for a bargain tbh. I would have just bought Halo at a "goodwill gesture" price. But not at the silly prices they were offering me. Funny thing was, I asked how much the whole bundle was officially, they said they were out of stock the Xbox 360s only had Xbox Ones in stock. They must have had at least 6 copies on the floor at this price all sealed like the one pictured.

I just wondered for future reference.

In that case they've probably sold the consoles without giving the game away too. In this case it wouldn't hurt them to sell it at $0.01 since that's what they paid, but they're a business after all and they are out there to make money…

Id probably buy five for $0.05
