Interested in getting an imitation iPhone

I did a search on ozbargain, couldn't find anything on it but thought I would run this across the community to see what people think.

I am interested solely because my mum is obsessed with the iphone but she doesn't have the finances and I don't want her to sign up to a contract and have her work so hard just to pay it off. I had been looking out for a deal on the iphone for her and pretty shattered when I missed out on the Telstra family and friends offer.

Anyway to cut to the chase, I showed her this phone from focalprice and she is willing, which I really want to get just in case she changes her mind (shes not the best with money…) I know you pay for what you get but was wondering on its usability. I am aware its android and she can use it…the build would probably be inferior but is there anything else I should consider?

Any thoughts appreciated.

  • so it has to resemble an iPhone in design?
as opposed to any Android phone with an iOS theme on it?

  • Pretty much…I don't understand it either, she just uses it to listen to music and call but I can;t reason with her. I bought her a galaxy 3 for a present but she sold it to one of her sisters, not very gracious of her but I am concern about her spending habits, but thats another topic for another day.

Am just watching this vid, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi2upBfvoLs

I think the imitation has an imitation interface as well so it won't be too much of a learning curve for her.

I am seriously thinking about buying it before she just goes behind my back. It wouldn't be the first time :(

  • this one from aliexpress is a similar price US $109.68 but has bigger Rom, camera. has replica OS. but lower screen res

  • Wow, thanks altomic exactly what I was looking for, the one I had didn't seem to have os. It says I've got 2 days to buy at that price, I'll sleep on it and do some more research. I so wish I had one to test out right now.

    • have a search around on aliexpress. but that one seemed a pretty decent one for the price

when i was in KL last year a street hawker tried to sell me a Iclone 5 like that one from aliexpress. I had a play with it and it was pretty nice. very responsive and no lag. and to the untrained eye it seemed genuine.

let us know if you buy it. i was tossing up between one of these and regular android. -went for android

      • Yeah will likely buy it, in my research, I had a read of your fake iphone thread btw. hopefully this one is similar to the one you saw in malaysia.

  • It sounds like your mum will accept anything as long as it has an apple logo or looks like an iPhone.
In that case, may I suggest this http://tinyurl.com/lwnso4o
You can stretch it out to enlarge the screen too :)

    • haha, hope it didn't take you too long to draw that! mum didn't like the s3 because the screen was 'too big'. so I probably need to scale yours down a few notch.

  • -1

Goophone's seem to be the preffered knock off, as seen on the xDA developers forums. Only they're a bit more expensive and you have less RAM in the device as well as a lower clocked processor so it'll perform a lot slower than the other fakes.

  • Try if you can avoid MTK6572… anything lower than MT6582/MT6589/MT6589T is basically crap and will only last probably a few weeks (not because it will break, it will be because it lags so much that it will be in the bin)

  • Thanks for your replies, I did have a look at the goophone, pretty shifty/(smart?) what they did in regards to the patenting of the design. These are quad cores I believe, MT6582/MT6589/MT6589T will the MTK6572 borderline unusable? for all she really uses it for is calling, listening to music and I suppose the occasional browsing and youtube?

Anyway still thinking…hoping for some crazy price error on iphones, otherwise I would never buy one myself.

    • For those tasks it would be ok I think… But we simply don't know how slow she can tolerate.
Buy it and see how she goes I guess?
Worse case scenario is $100 wasted.

  • lol this is really silly but that i5 looks good and its cheap, you would hope it has play store :/

  • The Telstra friends and family deal is still available…
