I'll start… Putting price as $9.99…. Why not just $10?! I'd be a lot happier with that!

        • I never said that I expected you to pay for rego (I didn't even mention CTP which is a separate thing). Like the below post, the rego cost is reflective of the use. So if the cost of a bicycle on the road is nil, then so be it - free rego. I don't care about the financial side of it.

The point is that rego makes you traceable - that's what I'm more interested in.

If cyclists want to be on the road like everyone else then they should be traceable like everyone else so that if something goes wrong or they break the law, they can be found and made accountable for their actions.

        • +1

And about CTP - again, it's not about the user, it's about the vehicle. So what that you can't drive two vehicles at once? Someone else could be using it. CTP covers anyone using the vehicle, not just you.

        • I know this isn't the point of your post but I'm posting it here anyway because meh.
Rego should include full third party insurance and it should be a criminal offence not to have it.
It would be nicer if NSW just pooled all the money and paid out from a fund.

    • +5

I think rego is calculated by the wear to the road caused by vehicle. Trucks do pay rego more than a car and car more than a motorcycle and motorcycle more than a bicycle .

      • +1

Here in Tassie motorcycle rego is the same as a car :/

      • +1

It's calculated by the age of the car and how safe it is in a crash I'd say.

My 26 year old car is $630 yearly in VIC while another late model car is only $520, despite the fact neither of them have ever been crash.

        !!VICROADS!!

I pay for third party property and injury insurance coverage whilst riding my bike. $100 a year. So do most of the people I ride with. Will you smile and wave at me the next time you pass me on my bike?

      "Hmmmmmm"

    • +5

I don't know where you guys live but in Adelaide I don't experience many problems with cyclists. They generally keep to their lanes and if I have to slow down or give them more room for a little while, so what?

The "problems" they cause really don't justify the rage some people have.

      • -1

In Melbourne a fair few decide to ride in between the traffic. I saw one the other weaving between a bus and me in a 4WD. I gave him a massive honk as he rode past me then blocking the left lane meaning I missed my street because I couldn't get into the left lane. For context if he had been concentrating he could've moved off to the street before mine to let me change lanes.

      • I think its a huge problem in Adelaide. Lanes are way to narrow and many of the streets weren't designed for the fellow cyclist.

    • +2

Nevermind cyclists- how about you're sitting at the lights, they just turn green, & before you can even start rolling, a huge MOTORCYCLE flies down—-> BETWEEN the frigging lanes of cars?? Not only illegal but very very danergous.

    • +8

Calm down. NSW has just made motorbike filtering legal. They would not have done this if it was "very very dangerous".

      • +4

I only recently saw a motorbike nearly get taken out while doing this. The fact that a gov't entity warrants something as safe doesn't fill me with confidence at all.

        • The fact that a gov't entity warrants something as safe doesn't fill me with confidence at all.

Let's look at it from another angle then.

It used to be illegal and a potential revenue stream. They have now removed this potential fines revenue. And if it's as dangerous as you say, more riders will do it now and more accidents will occur, so they will now be exposed to more costs from higher load on hospitals from injuries, police attendance and investigations, higher load on coroners offices and morgues when someone dies, and of course the political cost of having the road toll increase under their watch.

Does that sound like the typical actions of an Australian state government?

        • +4

Yep, there are craniums out there on m'bikes who think the white line is another lane - at any speed. Then there are the ones like me who slow down at lights and only filter if 1) the lanes are stopped, and 2) the space is clear to the front, plus 3) there's enough time to get to the front before the lights change.

      • Implying the government never does anything wrong/stupid/dangerous and is perfect.

    • +6

And what impact did this have on you?
If a motorcyclist goes past a vehicle without causing any disruption then so what? They don't have a negative impact on congestion - they just go by and that's the last you see of them.
A cyclist on the other hand will go all the way to the front of a queue only to slow down the entire queue and cause frustration as the queue tries to pass them.. Until the next traffic light comes by and the whole process just starts again.. This I just don't understand..

      • +1

The impact is probably the fact that you were about to push the accelerator and was 0.2 seconds off hitting the motorcyclist. Causes anxiety.

      • There is a reason for the lines on the road. You are not meant to drive/ride your vehicle on the lines (thereby creating their own lane) unless you are changing lanes or turning into a side street. It is illegal plain and simple unless it is an emergency. If everyone is allowed to create their own lanes willy nilly then why bother having lines?

This should apply to all road vehicles including push bikes.

    • I believe it's actually legal here in WA, provided you don't cross a solid white line when doing it and the cars are stationary.

What I can't understand is when I do it in traffic that's at a dead standstill, cars see me coming and move over so they're encroaching into the other lane and I can't pass. So instead getting through without slowing anyone down to any appreciable degree, you've now made me block every car behind you and push them back a spot in traffic. Insanity.

      • Hear, hear. Although I find most peak hour traffic and commercial vehicle drivers (trucks and reps) will often move to let me through. I reckon they understand riders are reducing the vehicle "spaces" that would otherwise be occupied by the length of 1 car per bike, thus reducing their travel time.
I do however have an issue with the 50cc "screamers" trundling along in the middle or off-side lanes of major roads.

  • -2

According to the recent rule, motorists must be no less than 1m. from cyclists. What about the cyclists running at more than 1m. from the roadside?? Friggin' reason for driving exasperation.

    • -1

And cyclists who ride 2 or more beside each other - therefore blocking the road

      • +1

I believe the road rules here in WA allow riding in double file provided it doesn't block the road.

In any event, from my experience, cyclists often don't pay attention and drift out more than they realise making it harder for cars to pass safely, and motorists often don't realise that it's safe to simply pass at a reasonable and consistent speed than hang around at the back for 5 minutes then accelerate aggressively and scare the hell out of the cyclist.

        • +1

From my experience as a cyclist, who keeps as far left as possible, I have many cars that try and overtake me and almost brush up against arm at speed… Maybe I should just drive my car and add to the pollution and congestion?

I can tell you when there is nothing between their flesh and bones and car drivers 1+ tonne metal box most cyclist DO pay attention very, very well - their safety depends on it.

Surely the number of drivers who text in low speed peak hour city traffic would far outnumber these absent minded cyclists.

    • Ever tried running over roadkill/broken glass/car parts/stuff that has fallen off trucks/all the gravel and debris that has been pushed from the road on a bike with thin tyres at 50 Km/Hr? I feel so much safer when i am riding next to somebody else, when I am in a group I am more confident I'll get noticed by drivers.

People who don't stay on the left of the escalators and just stand there. Especially when your in a hurry and need to get past them.

OR WORSE PEOPLE THAT STAND AND BLOCK TRAVELATORS.
They are there to help you cross the airport quicker, not to walk FOR you.

    • +3

      YES, the escalator one!

I was amazed the first time I travelled on the massive escalators in Sydney's CBD train stations during peak hour. People were so organised and considerate. Just imagine the crowds coming off a train and bottle-necking at the base of one VERY long escalator - instead of idiots standing all over the place, left and right, blocking pathways… every single person took one step each, and stood to the left of their step on the escalator. It was like watching ants form a line lol. Those who wanted to walk up the escalator would simply hop on to the right and keep walking. It was beautiful.

    • +2

Sometimes theres 2 escalators going the same way because of peak hour and such. I decree that the one on the right side should have people that only walk and dont stop.

    • +3

The worst ones are the people who stop at the end of the escalator trying to decide where to go next while an escalator of people are backing up behind them.

    • +1

Oh yes, totally agree however this backfired for me when I visited the UK. Got off the plane, took the tube to some inner city station and stood on the left-hand side of the escalator. Oh you are my friend.. I flip them the right way at work and friends houses :P

      • -5

        1) With the paper at the back, when you pull on it the roll pulls away from the wall. paper out the roll can jam against wall.
        2) Who are you as a guest to suggest your host is loading THEIR toilet rolls in THEIR house the "wrong" way - according to you? What would you think if they turned the paper around at your place?
I suppose you get angry if they visit your place and leave the seat up/down - contrary to the way you want it?

        • +2

The roll is rotating the exact same direction with the same force so it has exactly the same chance of jamming. It is the difference between pulling the sheets down (= front-loaded) and pulling the sheet up from the front (= rear-loaded). I dislike the rear-loaded ones because I have to go fishing for the loose sheet which is invisible, and sometimes get fingernails caught on something which hurts immensely.

        • +2

I don't know how someone could be so stupid to load the toilet paper facing the wall

    • I must be the only person who has no idea which way I put it on, nor really cares. Then again I mistakenly installed our toilet paper holder on a diagonal.

1 - When you go to a restaurant because of that one item on the menu that consistently attracts you to keep coming back and then it's either

A - Out of stock, B - Made completely differently or with less ingredients, C - Gone up in price.

2 - People that park just far away from the parking pole so that no other cars can park in the same zone even though more cars can easily fit there.

3 - Traffic - specially when it's CREATED by the government narrowing roads ON PURPOSE to make you use newly created tollways.

4 - People who buy hybrid cars (which use more fuel than any diesel car out there and drive like dogs balls and are unsafe)

5 - The money system. Have you ever wondered how money started?

Bank Invents Money - Lends it out to people but wants x% on top. How is it ever going to get back more money than it ever lent???? There is more money in digital bank accounts than there is physically printed!

People continue to use the system even though it's clear that for any one person to be able to successfully keep money for themselves, someone else has to be bankrupt. Recessions are merely prevention mechanisms to stop the whole system from imploding - but eventually it will implode because it's so damn flawed.

6 - If you work for someone - they are paying you peanuts to make them more money. It's a more secure, socially accepted pyramid scheme.

    • +8

"3 - Traffic - specially when it's CREATED by the government narrowing roads ON PURPOSE to make you use newly created tollways."

Yes. Epping rd to force you into LCT. Made my trip to work longer and dropped the, limit to 60 instead of 70 ay the time!

      • YES! I've lived in the area for years and this still pisses me off.

      • Although I don't use it much that lane reduction wasn't as bad as i thought it would be - but one thing I haven't figured out is why LCT doesn't do time of day billing. I'd be happy to pay $1 to get through that section a bit quicker off peak.. not $3.x whatever it is.

    • +2

4 - People who buy hybrid cars (which use more fuel than any diesel car out there and drive like dogs balls and are unsafe)

'Use more fuel than any diesel' - not true as there are many diesels which have higher fuel consumption than a standard hybrid. Friend's diesel Santa Fe gets around 8-10L/100km on diesel, other friend's Prius gets around 3.8L/100km. The Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrid does 1.9L/100km.

'drive like dogs balls' - depends on the car. Holden Volt is actually very zippy, better than most petrol cars (electric motors produce great torque). Some of the Lexus hybrids are excellent drives.

'unsafe' - not sure what you're basing that on but it's just plain wrong. If you think it's something to do with the batteries, well the fully electric Tesla Model S is the safest car in America. Enough said…

      • Model S hasn't arrived yet and I haven't heard about the Volt before - it looks to be a decent hybrid.

I guess I'm not up to speed with some of these newer hybrids. My mate's VW Polo TDI had real life 5.1L/100km.

Most of these 'rated' claims are nowhere near the real world claims anyway. My mate has a Toyota Camry hybrid and it drives decently and is very comfortable, but nearly 7L/100km ?

Prius real world is around 5L/100km too. The new 2014 model dropped in safety rating down to 4 stars as well and I'm not surprised. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the design is simply unsafe. It reminds me of the old A class Mercs that were so tall and boxy and could never pass any crash tests properly.

I've seen the Tesla pre-order information looks awesome although not delivered yet - but $150k for a decent hybrid? =\

I read through this article looks like the Volt definitely is a great car - So I grant you that.
        http://www.autos.ca/car-comparisons/comparison-test-best-fue…

The VW Golf TDI came in as the best "driver's" car with very low fuel consumption. I mean this is just one article but as I see it, the only massive difference would be emission?

Reading more about the Volt - it's 63kw… I can't see it being very zippy.

        • The volt is a serial hybrid which means the internal combustion engine does not drive the wheels (it's simply a generator that starts automatically to charge the batteries when they're flat). The wheels are driven at all times by the two electric motors with a total of 111kw power and 370nm of torque (more torque than a v6 commodore)

        • Hey guys, chill!
I saw a Prius actually doing 95 on the freeway…..(once, must've forgotten himself I guess)

          Bring back steam powered cars!

        • Erm, I didn't think the Tesla was a Hybrid. I thought it was a pure EV but I may be wrong as I haven't kept up for a few years. Maybe they have a new Hybrid model?!

        • Electric only, no hybrid.

      Differences:

      1. You did not have to inject starting capital into the business

      2. You did not come up with the idea of starting the business, choosing location, marketing strategies, etc.

      3. You take far less risk for the business's performance. If the business fails, you may be out of a job, but the owner loses all his starting capital (and potentially more, if creditors go after the owner and if business is not a limited liability structure)

If you're not happy with working for someone, you're perfectly free to start your own business!
