My new Kickstarter project - Ziggy

So, I decided to try Kickstarter for a new project of mine.
Its a modular coat hook that you can arrange to create any length of coat rack, or a pattern on your wall.

I would love to hear what people think.(I would also love people to contribute and share it around! if you like it.)

  • My only concern, would be, since the item is flat I wouldn't find it secure.

I know how easy things slide off flat surfaces, ie you wouldn't want to take your bag down and the next bag comes down with it breaking/damaging their phone.

I'd also consider bigger ziggys as well, for two reasons visually attractive and also more storage. I feel more confident my tablet fully supported.

    Good Luck with it.

    • There is definitely a limit to the size of the non-clothing objects you can put on them.
They take a lot of weight, but will only fit a phone or small tablet, due to the deliberately shallow depth.
      Thanks for your thoughts!

  • +1

    good luck

  • Will it come with wall fasteners or will that be left to the individual? Just wood screws and wall plugs, or dynabolts for brick, or toggle/expansion bolts for cavity/plaster walls are just a few considerations. Also I didn't see an anticipated sell price.

    • They come with mounting screws. But not with rawl plugs, or expansion adapters. Too many possible options to cover them all.
As for the anticipated sell price, The Kickstarter application process actively discouraged it, as things can change after the campaign ends, but in this case the rrp will be $15 - $20 + shipping, Kickstarter price for backers is $9-ish + shipping for oz.

You should add larger quantity options for backers. Call it a the shop pack or similar and offer 100 at a wholesale price.

    • Yeah, thats a good idea…may as well give people the opportunity to buy up big! thanks for the suggestion :)

  • If you don't mind me asking, how did you arrive at a $10K goal? If you dropped your goal to $5K would the economies of scale be that different and result in a drastic increase in cost per unit?

    • the 10k is made up of 8k for tooling, production, packaging and shipping of minimum quantities of 2 colours + 1k-ish for kickstarter fees + a little extra to cover currency fluctuations and unseen problems. 5k wouldn't cover production costs, mainly because of the minimum order requirements from the factory. Its a a good question though :) thanks!

      • where/how did you source out a factory for your design? Overseas production?

  • Hey mate! Great job trying this out!

I thought Aussies couldnt use Kickstarter and had to use Indiegogo! But i guess times have changed!

Did you consider using Indiegogo at all?

    Cheers & good luck!

yeah…Kickstarter opened up to Aussies late last year.
I did consider Indigogo. I can't remember my exact reasoning for using Kickstarter :)
maybe because I am more familiar with it…have some friends that have used it in the past.

  • This product is not for me - but I like it and wish you all the best
I also think your KS campaign page is well done
    Good luck

  • Things like bag will slide off?

    • Nope, they will be quite safe :) the pictures show a few different types of bags on ziggy. It works great! Thanks for the question :)

    • its hard to tell from the photos but it looks like they are angled so they shouldn't slide off.

      • Yep, thats right…there is a drawing down the bottom that shows it more accurately…

That's an extreme dramatisation leaving a Nexus 7 on that hook.

    • haha :) true. It's not something that most people would do…but it holds it just fine.

  • 4 screws per unit seems excessive.

If intended purpose is to sell multiple units then I'd have to categorise the design as poorly optimised.

I know I don't like putting unnecessary holes in the wall, and I doubt this needs ultimate tensile strength to hold light weight items…

Since I'm being critical I'll also list some ideas. Perhaps include removable adhesive pads (Like those in 3M products), or redesign so units can be linked together, or create variable length racks that many can be placed on (which can then be attached to wall with far less holes) etc.

Your presentation on Kickstarter is very good, best of luck.

    • Thanks for your thoughts :)
(you are right…you don't need 4 screws for each hook, you can get away with 2…but 4 gives you maximum strength)

  • Please provide a drilling guide i.e. a piece of paper with drilling positions to be taped on wall

Have you considered a version that is compatible with 3M Command strips?

    • Yep, each one comes with a template with hole positions and a way to lay out multiple hooks accurately.
I haven't tried it with 3M command strips…but its a good idea…i will test it out on the ones I have.

I also mentioned that above ;)

        • sorry dude…you totally did :(
You can take credit for the idea :D

    • Good call on the 3M Command strips whirlpool_guy and scytherbladez.
Did some quick tests and the large strips seem to hold quite well!

  • Exciting, Good to see some Aussie Start-ups chasing their goals. I am launching a kick-starter eventually (waiting for mould injection quotes at the moment) and find it awesome to see projects come to light. Hope you reach your Target Royal_Ten. Good Luck!

    • Thanks!
Good luck to you too :)
and if you need any assistance with the injection moulding stuff…get in touch, its something I deal with a lot in my day job…

  • Awesome,
way to go and get out there and do something like this, I hope it reaches your goal or $10K and you get this into production, they look cool, but a little scary with the iPad on top.

    • Thanks! It's honestly not that scary to put a small tablet on them :) I'm too precious with mine to risk it otherwise…but I get what you mean :D

  • No sound in the vid? Think you could at least some background music on (royalty free stuff, eg), but I also like the ones where the designer voices over, or is 'inteerviewed' about the project.

Think the intro is a bit slow. Could be sped up a bit - actually the whole thing.. then would leave time for a bit of an interview.

But pretty nice otherwise. Interesting idea, and you've already got some backers, so you must be doing something right!

    • Thanks for your thoughts…yeah, the sound is actually something that most people don't seem bothered by…but is a fair enough comment :)

just need to keep those backers coming in!…still 3+ weeks to go!
