Wifi USB Adapters / PCI Cards Help

Hi guys,

My internet connection is extremely slow. Have tried powerline, but no go as too much power being used. I have a wifi card, but it is old and not good. The card is pretty far from the wifi router, so I am looking to buy either a usb or pci wifi adapter that has good range and speed.

On http://www.mwave.com.au/networking-wireless/adapters-addon-c…
which one is the best or which one would you recommend?

The distance is 10metres plus with 4 - 5 walls. I only get 2 bars with my current pci.

Some of the antennas have 3 antennas or are longer, don't know if this means signal will be stronger. Don't know if PCI or USB is also the way to go.

Thanks

  • If powerline is not an option, then you will have to look into getting a wifi bridge or a repeater. I'd look into getting a cheap router and setting up a bridge, by connecting the router via ethernet and placing it at a mid-point between the original router and your current PC.

A lot of routers, especially ones that can be flash with DD-WRT (or a variant of) can be reconfigured into either bridge or repeater modes. Another handy feature is the ability to boost the signal by upping the signal TX power (though it might increase the power usage and heat produced)

  • Just a recommendation i bought items from mwave early last year and one of which was a DOA motherboard. So far they have apparently replaced the board twice as well as sent it away four times all of which the item came back in the same condition. The first time i trusted them and payed the $80 fee (that i have discovered was illegal) that they forced me to pay.
It has now been over a year and they still won't give me a refund, as a result they have scammed $230 dollars off me. I don't mean to name and shame but i thought you deserve they heads up.

  • might be able to call your ISP and get a new modem/router.
I got a new one after the old one stopped working and I went from 2 bars to full bars.
I'm with Optus and they seem happy to replace modems with the latest model. They do it for free with little waiting time.
