What entertainment book to buy - Hard copy or mobile app?

Entertainment book now has a new way of buying the membership; their mobile app. I can see that is very convenient as whenever I want to use a coupon, I don't have it with me (apart from pre-planned times). I want to definitely buy the app this year as I always have the phone with me and I don't need to physically carry the book around.

However, I am not sure if we can SWAP vouchers with this app? There are 95% of vouchers in the book that I don't use so I end up swapping them with fellow ozbargainer's every year.

What do you recommend?

My personal opinion is to get the hard copy so we can swap the vouchers. You get to go to the places you like more often.

    • Yes. That is why I don't want to get the app. But if you just think of the other benefits of the app; like being able to use your vouchers instantaneously, not having to carry the book around everywhere, etc. you just wish you can use it.

BUT… without being able to swap, I also don't find a great deal of value in the book personally.

      • agree ..without this sort of forum for swapping doubt we would still buy the book ..it seems to be going down in numbers and value each year

  • If you look at the US version of the app on the iTunes store that will most probably have an Australian equivilant, the ratings are terrible. This might better inform your decision:

Swapability is probably part of what prompted them to create the app.

  • How will they delete a used voucher from your app?

  • anyone here selling Sydney North book ??

    • I think they are doing an anniversary special edition

Sydney + Sydney North 2 in 1 book for 70 instead of 60-65 ( cant remember which) for 1 separate book

the combined book seems better value

  • Does anyone know how the digital version works? Is the voucher cancelled when used, as I would assume you couldn't use multiple times

    • Does anyone know how the digital version works?

Don't bother asking them via email, they don't have a clue.

I've just been to two launches for the book, so will try and answer any questions you have.

When you go to use a voucher with the app, a 'redeem' button comes up on your phone - you show it to the merchant, who then presses it. A confirmation button then comes up, which you press to confirm your redemption.

There's also a 'near me' feature to show businesses from the book in your immediate geographic location which will be good for travelling.

The app can be loaded on four smart phones in your family, but only one is able to be 'open' at a time - if your son has it open on his, you can bump them off to use it yourself.

I'd love to use the app, but my phone is a little old for it. You need android 4.1.2.

Oh, and it should be available for tablets in the next few weeks.

I think my personal favourite this year is that when you register your gold card/membership, you get a $50 voucher through Virgin! Their deal in the book is 5% off gift cards and I confirmed with the airline that when you book using the gift card you don't pay the $7.70 booking fee per flight!

I'm selling them again this year, so if you don't know anyone selling them, you are more than welcome to purchase through me! It is fundraising for Beerwah State High School in Queensland. No delivery fees for the digital version!

If anyone has any other questions about the app, please sing out and I'll try and get answers for you.

    • thankyou sam-1966 for a very imformative comment

  • So someone could just open the app and delete all your digital vouchers by "redeeming" them all?

    • Theoretically yes, but you can get onto Entertainment and get them unredeemed - someone did ask about this at the launch as to what happens if your toddler played with the app.

It might be safest to sign out of the app unless you are planning on using it.

      • Ah excellent, good to hear. Apart from the swapability that was probably the only concern with the digital version.

  • I got the app this year. Definitely prefer the app, don't have to awkwardly carry a big stack of vouchers in my wallet. I don't have time to swap vouchers, so the non-swapability aspect of the app doesn't deter me. You can share the ent book with up to 4 devices. I bought the app and got my boyfriend to download it.

    • Up to 4 devices

      That's pretty good
