Scooter Newbie

Hello everyone!

I'm thinking of getting a scooter for work next year. Not travelling huge distances and considering a scooter over a car pretty much for convenience sakes.

I'm probably looking to get a new scooter.. I only really know Vespa though. Are there any other brands I should consider/you recommend?

Also, would someone be able to give me rough breakdown of other ongoing costs associated with having a scooter.

I really know nothing! Thank you. :)

    Registration cost:
Engine capacity up to 60cc $126.80
    Engine capacity between 61cc and 125cc $361.10
    Engine capacity between 126cc and 500cc $463.40
    Engine capacity over 500cc $614.10

    Insurance:
third party for about $100-200 per year

If you buy a cheap scooter for less that $5000 it is not usually worth comprehensive

    Fuel:
$8-10 per week (roughly, likely less)

    Service:
$70-120 for minor service. $300 for major service

Helmet $70-150 (or up to $1000)
    Jacket $100 (to $1000)

    FREEEeeeeeeEEe parking in Melbourne!!!!
I dont usually mind scooters. But I hate it when they go to the front at traffic and are slow to get off the line. In my view, that is the most dangerous aspect of scooter riding in city traffic.

    • Wow, thank you.

I'll be sure to pay extra attention to the lights if I end up getting one. :)

    • So cheap for the engine capacity up to 60cc!
Although I would hate to be on something so slow and less than a 200cc.

      I'd say buy a motorcycle ;)
Apparently it's safer because it doesn't have the board where you place your feet on a scooter. That board apparently breaks a lot of peoples ankles.

You'll notice a 50cc scooter will be real slow, so just keep that in mind. You're max speed will be about 80km on a straight, maybe 90. Also take in to account that your acceleration.. I'm joking there is no acceleration! haha

      • Call me a girl but I'm a bit scared of motorcycles. Haha. Also had some family things occur related to motorcycles so in my Dad's eyes a scooter is probably "safer" than a motorcycle. My commute will only be a few km and I don't think there's any roads higher than 70km and will probably drive in any other situations. (I could bike but drivers probably won't see me). Thanks for the insight though! I'll keep that in mind when speaking with the sales people. :D

        • Do you have a bike license?

        • Not yet. I believe I'll need one if I end up getting a scooter right?

        • If you're in QLD and its like 50cc or less, I don't think you do? Pretty sure elsewhere you do need a license.

        • You're wrong if you think drivers will see you riding a scooter! When you're on the two wheels you'll realise how bad the drivers can be, especially how they don't always check their mirrors, let alone blind spots.

Anyways, if you do opt for the scooter, I highly suggest you get something with a bit more grunt than 50cc. Try for 150cc as a bare minimum. You'll want some power as there may be times where you need to power yourself out rather than brake.

I recommend you do a course for a learner permit. This will give you a taste of riding.
You can try it at a place like HART
          http://hart.honda.com.au/

You can choose to do it on a scooter, 250cc bike or god forbid, a cT110 (postie bike)

You can try it on a bike and if you do not like it, you can change to a scooter.

On the road, in a car or a bike, I never assume that drivers can see me.

Additional costs will be medical expenses and bike repairs. It's inevitable that you will have a mishap at sometime in owning a bike. Hopefully only minor.

      Aren't you the optimistic type..

    • My friend used to tease me as a temporary Australian.

    • It is true. I often catch a cold when riding in winter, especially if it rains

  • whats typical price of a 1 seat 50cc scooter as far as rego and compulsory medical?
