Keyed car body

Anyone else have been unfortunate to have their rides keyed by inconsiderate people?

How does insurance cover these incidences? Do we have to pay the excess to get it fixed?

And how much would it cost for the panel-beating/repainting/polishing? My scratch marks span a door + rear side with some regions deeper than others.

Is it even worth making a police report on this? Since there isn't any CCTV where my vehicle was parked.

I have used a product called scratch x2.0 from super cheap auto to remove scratches on my car. It only works when the scratch is not too deep.

Can you see bare metal? if so this product would not work and it's about $50 for a small tube from memory

  • my v expensive car got keyed, i got it repaired. out of pocket 500 excess

  • This happened to me. It was a Holden Barina. The insurance company wrote the car off.

They paid me $4000 from memory..they just used the lower side of current market value :-/ even though it was in good condition. I did think I had to pay to lodge the claim though, even though it wasn't my fault..I could be wrong (few years back)..but I believe they just took it out of the payout they gave me.

I was sort of in a catch 22 after they said it was a write off…as if I didn't accept the payout, then my car was uninsurable anyway as it was deemed a write off.

  • Might not be road rage or other driver related. Mate was checking out this girl across the street when he got out of his car. Later on that day, came back to slashed tyres.

The police will ping you if you travel in the right hand lane regardless of the speed limit, unless you are overtaking or turning right………Just saying

    • Wrong information. Page 9 - http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/usingroads/downloads/top_10_misund…

      It says

On multi-lane roads with a speed limit of more than 80km/h, motorists
must not drive in the right-hand lane unless they are:
      • overtaking
      • turning right or making a U-turn
      • avoiding an obstacle
      • driving in congested traffic
      • driving in a special purpose lane or if there is a Left Lane Must Turn
Left sign or a left traffic arrow and the driver is not turning left.

  • From memory, you should get a police report so that they send you a letter for insurance purposes. It is also worthwhile reporting the matter to the local police station so that the police has the case registered as you may not be the only victim. Sometimes, it is not always personal. I had my 1 year old car keyed along with several other cars. It was likely that someone happened to be angry at the world that day and decided to inconsiderately lash out.

I had my car fixed by a good panel beater that ensures the paint work for life and this cost me around $400 for a single panel although the cheapest shop only charged $150 but wouldn't guarantee their work. Depending on how long you wish to keep the car and how much the resell value would be when the time comes to sell, perhaps decide on what would best suit your needs. All the best on getting it repaired. :)

  • My car was keyed about 3 weeks ago with 30+ other cars in the unit block! It was in a secure car park but I guess it wasn't that secure after all. Three of my tyres have been slashed too. It was a Monday morning, my wife and I were taking the kids to school and going to work after. You can imagine the whole day was ruined. I only have one car so the kids were late to school and I was late to work. It was a hassle to get the car fixed which took 2 weeks (used a hired car during that time). I have been told the damage was around $4000 just on the paintwork.

The vandals didn't steal anything, they just went around damaging the cars. I saw a Range Rover where the vandals took out the various letters (that made up the words Range Rover) on the bonnet. Everyone were quite shocked that day. Even Channel Nine came and reported the news.

      slow news day

    • I've seen a whole street done, every car had tyres slashed. The police actually caught the people who did it. The excuse for slashing so many was to cover up that they had a grudge on one of the neighbours and didn't want it to look like a targeted attack.
