School Uniforms - any good purchase or exchange sites/tips?

Ok, so just read the list for my DD's school uniforms next year and just about passed out at the cost of them. They are as bad as I thought they'd be, though thankfully not as bad as other schools can be. Don't mind buying one formal, one regular and one sports one…but that's going to set us back about $300 just for them, and I'd like her to have a couple of spares so that I don't have to wash her regular uniform each night.

Am planning to keep an eye on Gumtree, Ebay and local op-shops for any second hand ones coming up during the year. I noticed a couple of uniform exchange sites when I was Googling it, but none of them seem to have any listings for our school on it - but I'm not sure if it's just co-incidence or they are just lousy websites.

So was wondering if there are any other sites or sources people get second-hand or cheaper uniforms from that I'm not aware of.

Or any tricks/timing for getting stuff at a better price. I'm going to ask what plain substitutes I can use for skirts/shorts, but I get the feeling the answer is going to be 'none' as they have embroidery on them.

TIA.

Most schools have a second hand shop for unclaimed lost property or donations.. check if your daughter's school has one too?

We usually have a second hand shop at our school but don't at the moment as we are in uniform transition.

The only generic items I've been able to get away with are white socks and navy tights. The sports socks had to be purchased from the school as they had a logo on them.

Does the $300 you mentioned include the school bag and hat?

    • Doh. Nope. Just the main uniform pieces and sports house shirt. And not all the Winter gear either (just the jacket). Am assuming you are allowed plain trackies. Might take a trip up to the school and have a chat to find out and see if there's a second hand shop too.

Thank you for the suggestions so far!

      • Thanks for clarifying that.

I know $300 sounds expensive but I've heard the start up costs for Prep quoted as higher than that. I think I paid just over $300 for our start up prep costs which included the summer uniform, sports uniform, bag and hat.

  • Facebook, is getting big in my area, have friends who sell and buy stuff all the time, school uniforms come and go as well, you can put a wanted on the site and wait, or set up a uniform site in your area. Seems to work pretty well

  • Try this site, I'm not sure if it is just for private schools or if public schools are included. www.oldschooltrading.com.au
