Pine Nuts

I love foods with pine nuts but my goodness the price is out of control!

Pesto stirred through pasta used to be a quick and easy cheap meal but forget about that if you are purchasing your basil and pine nuts at the supermarket. Basil is easy enough to find an alternative supplier but affordable pine nuts remain elusive. I saw them for $95/kg in the self serve nut section of a Coles supermarket not long ago! $70/kg is about the best I've found but with most recipes using between 50-100g even that price is a little much.

I hear that there is a global shortage so maybe it is time to switch to another nut?

  • Aldi have small packets. Not sure of price.

  • hey pesto pasta is my fav :P
Grow about 50 sq on basil my backyard.
I go to a local nut shop, we have a few in our area, they are 36 a kilo
Costco is second in the list around 50
Should be something similar in Perth as well

  • whole food shop

  • You can use different nuts in pesto, maybe experiment with cashews, macadamias.

Big international delicatessens usually have cheap large packets of nuts/grains. My friend told me about one in West End Brisbane (17 Duncan St) http://www.mustdobrisbane.com/eat-drink-delis-continental/me… and it is really cheap for nuts, olives, heaps of other things. Just amazing.

I'm sure there will be similar shops where you live.

  • Kakulas Brothers in Northbridge sell Chinese Pine Nuts for $42.50/kg (or at least they did when I was last there a few weeks ago.

2Brothers have them for $40/kg here:

I have never bought from them, but postage costs are reasonable and I have heard good things about them.

  • Thanks for all the tips. Unfortunately there is no Costco or Aldi in perth but I'll definitely check out that place in Northbridge and a few online. Will also pop into the local health food shop and see what they have in their nut section.

  • I get mine from the Middle Eastern grocer, pay between $30-35/kg This is Melbourne mind you, but if you have a Middle Eastern supermarket it'd be a good place to start. They usually have great prices on beans, lentils etc too

  • Sometimes coles/woolies have them in those packs that are around $10/kg when on special. As to basil, get some seeds, they grow like weeds.

  • Aldi have them at $45/kg normal price

  • Gees, I've never seen them $10/kg at coles/woolies. Do they have then in big 1kg packs..I've only seen them in the small 100-200g bags @ $90-100/kg. And if you're really lucky a 30% off special @ $70/kg..
