Best way to get a Chromecast currently?

Chromecasts look like they have awesome functionality and are so much cheaper than alternatives such as Apple TV, that is if you can get one!

Anyone found any good ways to get them at a relatively cheap price at the moment?

Fishpond looks cheapish but has some poor reviews..

Fishpond have a history of not honouring their deals and they also have an automatic price adjust system which scales the price according to demand.

The last time the Chromecast went for $16, people who ordered it at the low price had their orders cancelled. People who bought later and at a the higher price had their orders fulfilled. And they also take ages to refund the money — mine wasn't refunded until I actually wrote a letter demanding a refund a week later.

A paypal refund would have been nearly instant (or at least, take only a few hours ) for the merchant, I don't see why they had to delay for so long.

    • Yeah by the sounds of that I should avoid fishpond at all costs! Thanks

It costs around ~$38 USD with tax from the US (Best Buy/Fry's/New Egg) or roughly $41 AUD. You wouldn't be saving much from the Fishpond price.

I'm currently in the US and Amazon had the Chromecast on sale last week for $32 USD shipped. I was considering buying a bunch and sending them out to OzBargainers but after you add currency conversion, Aus Post shipping, it's really not worth it.

    • You should buy some!! I'd definitely be keen

  • i got one from fishpond two months ago. took them almost a month to deliver it. total cost plus shipping was about $56. i tried it for a few weeks and sold it on ebay. chromecast runs on your home wifi network. you need to specify the security settings of your wifi modem. it was patchy for me, occasional stuttering and buffering. the dongle gets very hot after half hour use. it needs a power source or if you have a spare powered usb slot in your tvb, you can feed power off that. i guess it depends on individual usage, but for me, nothing beats a physical cable connection. oh yeah, it only works with specific wifi frequencies, look it up.

    • I guess that depends on your wifi connection. Been using it without any issues.

    • A lot of what you said seem like accepted and advertised facts about the Chromecast..

But yeah, agree with Ozhunter, would depend on your individual WiFi network, mine is quite strong so would expect it to be fine.
