Connoisseur Ice Cream flavour discussion

OzB's favourite ice cream, what can we all share about the various flavours!

When on special I enjoy taking a punt on flavours I don't normally buy. Last time I tried Choc Honey Nougat and it's now one my favourites!

I really enjoy the flavours with 'bits' in them, but find it hard to resist tunnelling my way through the ice cream to eat said bits which causes more surface area / ice over and ruins the tub quicker.

The flavours:

Vanilla - all time #1 fave
Cookies and Cream - all time favourite
Choc Honey Nougat - all time favourite
Cafe Grande - pretty awesome, but not quite as good as the above three IMO.
Summer Strawberry - did not like
Chocolate Obsession - did not like (surprising as I love Cherry liquor type chocolates)
Belgian Chocolate - yet to try, is this the same chocolate as the Choc Honey Nougat? Or darker / nicer?
Caramel Honey Macadamia - yet to try, in general I do not like artifical caramel flavour. Any thoughts?
Butterscotch and Gingerbread - yet to try

Have I missed any?

The Butterscotch and Gingerbread tastes like dipping a gingerbread man in a Chai Latte…… I love it.

The caramel and macadamia is actually really nice, it actually tastes like caramel and there are swirls of it throughout! This and cookies and cream are my faves :)

I don't eat chocolate, so I'm sorry I can't comment on your questions about them D:

  • I've just tried the Aldi salted caramel. It was very nice!

  • I pretty much ate no other ice cream except Caramel Honey Macadamia for months and months.

Then I got kind of sick of it. Compared to other ice creams, I find Connoisseur really 'airy' if that makes sense. The ice cream isn't quite the consistency and texture that I prefer. I'm not quite sure how to describe or explain it - but the consistency I like would be ice creams in tubs like Homer Hudson and Ben & Jerry's. Does anyone else relate or even understand my poor explanation? lol Is it actually the texture or consistency or more to do with how American ice creams taste in general differing to Aussie ice creams?

I love the flavour of the Connoisseur ice creams… if they had the texture I enjoy with other brands, I'd be in freaking heaven.

I also have a weird habit of letting ice cream melt a bit in the bowl before eating it. Something about the milky, partially melted edges being so much nicer. Hence I probably notice the airy-ness of Connoisseur more than others would, because it becomes more apparent when it starts melting.

aaaaaand that's my long post on ice cream :P

    • P.S. I've never seen the Butterscotch and Gingerbread one! God that sounds delicious. Must. Find. Soon.

    • I think you mean it's light so it's not as dense as the others?

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I believe in order to increase profit manufacturers pump air into the ice cream. Like most brands I bet you they started off really good and in overtime slowly increase the amount of air.

Yes! Commercial ice creams are aerated. I wonder if everyone is aware of that. After having certain ice creams (and frozen custard in Canberra, which is basically old school ice cream that isn't aerated at all), I've been put off any ice cream with obvious amounts of air in it. Spoils the taste and enjoyment for me so much :( which really is a shame because I genuinely enjoyed the taste of most commercial ice creams.

If you let a bowl/tub of Connoisseur melt enough, you'll see that it pretty much turns into foam, not milk.

Melt a less aerated ice cream and it turns to a milky consistency liquid. Very very different. I can taste that difference even when it's frozen. It's in the mouthfeel.

        • I'm with you. Give me rock hard spoon bending cold super dense ice cream thanks (that melts into a cream not a foam).

It's great to chat with others passionate about their ice cream.

  • Looks like I have to try the caramel and macadamia!!!

    • FWIW, Woolworths do their own Select version of that flavour. Haven't had it for years but from memory they are on par. Woolies brand might be slightly cheaper, unless you grab the Connoisseur on special :)

Try Aldi and Coles as well. They'll more than likely have their own brands of the same flavour. Coles make excellent fancy ice creams, with the 2L tubs (shaped like Connoisseurs tubs) for $5 regular price.

Actually, here you go: Coles version.
      Woolies version

:D why not try all and report back to us on which is best? hehe

      • Thanks for the tip! Time for a taste off!

I've always suspected Connoissuer/Nestle produce the Woolies (or was it Coles?) versions, given the cartons are the same. Yet to try though. It's amazing how cheap they can make it when they want to!
