Mobile Phone/Plan upgrade

Hi All,

I am currently on a Vodafone $29 plan which provides vodafone to vodafone free calls and text + $180 worth calls to other networks including international calls. I got 950MB mobile data(200MB base + 750 MB bonus Data pack). The phone which I got for this plan is a Galaxy Nexus.

I have 3 more months to go on the contract, but vodafone offers to renew the contract 3 months early.
At the moment there are very little options in that price range with voda ($30 per month range).
The options I have are to go with Galaxy S3 or Sony Xperia Z.

The problem I have with GS3 is, there is not much difference between my current GNexus and GS3 (similar size screen, almost 2 years old now). So I don't want to stick to GS3 for the next 2 years.

The Xperia Z has a nice Full HD 5 inch display with 2 GB RAM. but I saw many people reporting of screen cracks appear for no reason. I am bit reluctant to go ahead with Xperia Z for this reason as the repairs can get costly if screen brake on its own.

Will it be better to wait another month or 2 and try to get GS4 or HTC ONE on a cheaper contract($30)?.

The main things which I look for in a new phone is;
1. Large screen (similar to GNexus or bigger)
2. Full HD display
3. Better pixel count (similar to GNexus or better)
4. Better battery (similar to GNexus or bigger).
5. Max spend $30-$40 per month for phone + call credit ($720-$960 over 2 year period)
Please share your thoughts.

  • Do you intend to BYO (buy your own phone) or only get them from Voda?

There are only a limited range of phones that Voda offers, consider BYO a Nexus 5 perhaps?

    • Thanks for the response.
If I break the Voda contract and buy a BYO phone plan now , I have to pay the early exit fees which is about $90.Being an OzBargainer I would not pay early exit fees just for the sake of owning a new phone.

Then I suggest waiting. If none of their $30 cap phones interest you and you cannot afford their pricier plans to get a better phone, your only option is to just wait until your contract finishes and you have then no more obligation to stay with them. That will put you in a better bargaining position.

If you are a long-time customer you may be able to negotiate into a cheaper Samsung S4 or S4 Active, Vodafone doesn't have many customers left so might try and retain you with a cheaper offer.

Start researching other options, I would look at Vaya (4G) / Telechoice / Amaysim for some BYO SIM options which for $20 a month should give you plenty of call/data allowance.

I would wait the 3 months. Their deals are pretty crap and you would most likely get the same deal in 3 months when they drop their prices.

Personally I would buy outright and go on prepaid.

Or even wait a day or two before your contract ends and then see if they can offer you something better.

  • How about getting xperiaZ and selling it off and get a NEXUS5 for 399$ as outright.
