AirAsia flights reliable?

Hi all,

I booked an upcoming flight from Melbourne To KL with Airasia. It is still 6 weeks away and this specific flight disappeared from their website.
It looks to me they shifted both passengers together in their later flight.

I called them and after putting me on hold for several minutes they confirmed the flight….but

What is your experience with Airasia Oz flights?

  • I flew with them once to Kuala Lumpur. I had no issues. But as a budget airlines they can change/cancel the flights last minute. That is a risk you take when you fly with a budget airlines. But as you have already got confirmation from their customer support you don't need to worry about it for now. When I flew with them I tried to change my seat but their website was giving error. I tried to reach them on the customer care number four times and each time I was on put on waiting for almost 10 minutes but couldn't talk to them.

  • I flew with them from the Gold Coast to KL and on to Phuket last month. You get what you pay for with this airline. The KL terminal is the worst I have ever seen. Keep logging into the online service and check the flight status. No need to necessarily panic though, the flight may have dissapeared because it is full.

  • Have a look to check that they haven't just changed the flight time by an hour or 2. My experience is (Happened 3 times to me) that when AirAsia flights disappear, that is a sign that they have pulled that flight. They do that way ahead of time, but take a long time to notify passengers. Maybe you can glean something from their facebook page. Also send them an on-line enquiry, and after about 6 days (they say that will reply within 5 days but they never do) Then do an entry on their facebook quoting your enquiry number and asking them to escalate your enquiry. That is your best chance of getting a reply from them.

    • That's exactly my suspicion. I called the Call Centre again and pretended to book a flight for my friend for the same flight. Apparently the flight is fully booked, but still 6 weeks away and previous and next flights are selling for $199.00 online.
The seat selection is still working and shows only about 5 seats have been selected.

I could get an alternative on the current Jetstar sale, if they would not delay the notification.

  • Go to optiontown.com and try upgrade to business class. Its quite cheap to do it this way and its legit. I haven't flown the mel - kul route with airasia but I will be in July and I am planning on trying to get an upgrade to business for the flight back because I know it will be painful. I've flown with them a few times before out of perth and intra-asia and its been fine. Not much leg room, about the same amount as tiger but the seats are a hell of a lot more comfy and the food is cheap.

    • Not too fussed about comfort. Just need to arrive on time. I have used Airasia on their first flights from Melbourne many years ago when they still used non-recliner seats. A bit torturous, but nothing to complain for $100.

      • Im pretty sure they recline but not very much. The upgrade to business is only like $150-ish so its pretty good for the length of the flight.

        • Economy is fine for me. When Airasia X started long haul they used non recliner seats:

          http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/wings-down-under/2010/02/a…

        • Screw that! That's probably why their KUL > London route fell through. Aint nobody wanna travel that far without reclining.

        • They used A340 planes on their London and Paris routes which were quite spacious…

The A330 non recliners were only used on the Aussie routes.

  • Better than MAS. MAS staff(in flight) are bigots.

  • WOW! It looks like they might have an email address that is actually monitored, and emails to it answered. I will write it down in case I get too frustrated with their other forms of non-communication. I am guessing that the alternative flights will preserve whatever price deal you got initially. I have heard nightmares about credit shells. In my experience refunds take about 3 months. It feels like deja vu to me - yet again!

I totally agree. No reply to my online enquiries, customer service chat was useless and finished off too early and phone customer service confirmed my flight, even though it was already cancelled…

Yes, the alternative flights would preserve the price deal, however I needed to catch a flight from Singapore on the 21st May and did not want to take an extra day of holiday.
Luckily I successfully "reserved" a Jetstar deal through direct deposit payment option 2 days before the cancellation notification email which worked out cheaper and no transit required.

Disgusting if the refund takes 3 months…

'Disgusting if the refund takes 3 months…"
In my experience that is a minimum. Just process it, mark it on the calendar to follow up in 4 months, and try to forget about it. Otherwise it will drive you mad.

  • I had a lot of trouble making bookings etc. using Internet Explorer but it worked fine with Chrome. I have done 16 flights with them in the last 12 months, one cancellation of an 11PM (approx) flight from KL to Sydney & i was given the choice of 10AM (approx) same day or any day after. It was no problem, I'm flexible so I just spent another day in KL. It would be inconvenient for some people but I was OK.

  • I got the cancellation email. Not once but twice and my flight is still just over 2 weeks away so I guess I can still receive more of these.

Had to change the departing flight initially and now I have to change the return flight. I guess you get what you pay for. I would shift the dates completely to a better time, but with accommodation booked it makes it that much harder. If you have anything important to get to or your time is short, do not fly air asia is my recommendation.
