Uniqlo's new Melb store opens today, plans to open Sydney Store by end of year

Uniqlo opens it's Melbourne store today at Emporium Melbourne, and from the smh, it looks like there will be one in Sydney sometime in the near future.

Uniqlo will open it's first Sydney store by the end of the year, after securing planning permission for its new site at 420 Pitt Street.

Anybody been to the Melbourne store yet? What's the range like?

Havent been yet, but maybe tonight with the misses trying to drag me out. but from my experience from other than in Japan , shanghai and NYC. its pretty much catered or adjusted to the country in my view. I never brought anything from other uniqlo besides japan as nothing really grabbed my attention. for example in Japan there have UT shop http://randomwire.com/wp-content/uploads/uniqlo-ut-store.png which is a t shirt in a capsule shirt that is filled fill popular styles and anime. i have a few and still in its capsule havent seen anything like it in other country.

    • The UT shop looks cool! I am going to look for their Shinsaibashi Flagship store when I visit Osaka in May.

    • I agree the stores seem to be catered to their specific region. Went to Europe last year and went into a store in London, walked back out within 2 mins after seeing a bunch of bland looking polos etc.
stopped in Singapore on the way back and it was like a totally different brand. I must've shopped there about 5 times - much better range of clothing and way better pricing
Hope the melb store is inline with the Asian region but not holding my breath

  • theres heaps of other stores similar to uniqlo in japan, if you go to tokyo head to akihabara and around there heaps of interesting clothing shops.

Uniqlo (in Hong Kong at least) sells really good mens underwear, very good for the price.

    • Uniqlo undies are great, I am looking forward to buying some more. I lost my pair in Tasmania.

      • And I assume there is a story to go along with that?

    • Hubby said yes to that. Uniqlo undies are the new Giordano undies!

The Japanese are laughing at the Aussies for hyping and lining up just to go into a clothes store equivalent to our Just Jeans type store.

Yet a fews months or so ago, I was laughing at the Japanese at Omotesando for lining up (~2hrs) for Max Brenner.

Great range. Been to the London and New York stores. Hoping that the Australian store will be similarly well priced and stocked.

Went to the store, i find the pricing has been "harmonised" to the australian market. Nothing like the pricing i am used to when i head overseas in Thailand or in HK.

I'll save my money for my airasia holiday later in the year.

Australian consumers are always being ripped off.

I would say though, we are only charged more, coz we earn more.

If we were charged less for all our goods, we'd end up just bidding more of our spare money on non-imported goods, like houses and utility bills, and price out my generation even more.

      • +2

Well, to be fair. H&M seems to have priced their stuff reasonably aggressive compared to the local market.

Consider the higher wages of staff compared to overseas, as well as operating stores, taxes, shipping, etc.

I find the prices aren't too bad- quite a few things I looked at were comparable to HK/Japanese prices when considering the exchange rate.

Definitely heating up competition on the old retail dinosaurs Myer/DJs

        • Coz it'sa oopening sale? Or did u say that comparing the rrp?

They had tee shirts with uniqlo branding on it, not too dissimilar to staff wear if u choose white, for $15 each, that doesn't seem cheap consider its advertising for them. The coloured jeans were $30, but I like my normal blue colour, those were $50.

I noticed muji, the jap retailer above uniqlo has weird stuff too, example I saw a wall mounted cd player for Australia, and yes that was the product description, for $250. I was shocked cd players were still available to buy.

Actually, you were right- just checked JPN/HK sites and they are quite a lot cheaper there. My memory is of when the AUD was worth crap.

My point still stands though that operating stores in AU is much more expensive than most other countries, and this has to be recovered by increases in prices.

In my opinion, what makes a good deal is when both the consumer and the business benefit. Unfortunately, here on OzBargain I've noticed this growing culture of entitlement where people expect to receive amazing deals where the business reaps no benefit or even makes a loss. Sure, we as consumers in Australia have been screwed over for much too long, but you can't expect to right this situation by us consumers screwing businesses over in reverse.

Back on topic, I agree that I would rather save my money and take a trip to Asia, but nonetheless it's still nice to have options available locally.

  • the ultra light down jackets are double the price compared to the US prices

    • what are they compared to AUS prices?

"WELCOME TO UNIQLO!!!" - every store attendant

^ They sporadically yell that out in the store every few minutes(least in the Malaysian Uniqlo).

From my experiences, store design is very cool/unique….very organised and set out by colour. Clothing is cheap and great quality.

I try to go to Japan every year or two depending on Jetstar sales. I Take an empty case and fill it up with clothes for the return journey, plus I might fill a couple of boxes and send by surface. I find there are always clothes sales in Japan, good quality too.

  • Went to various Uniqlo stores in Japan/Malaysia the past few weeks including:

    • KL 1 Utama store
    • Osaka Shinsaibashi flagship store
    • Kanazawa Kohrinbo 109
    • Kyoto - inside Mina on Kawaramachi Dori

In Japan they seem to have promotions on certain items every few days where prices are significantly reduced (35-50% off).

At the end of each aisle there are bargain bins for discontinued items that are worth looking into - still nicely packaged or folded. We got some Star Wars T-shirts for around 500 yen, and jeans just over 1000 yen.

Alteration fees to shorten pants are around 300 yen but only applicable if item is less than 1990 yen.

Got some ladies cargo pants from the KL store which were reduced from RM 169 to RM 59 (less than $20). The same pants were also discounted in Japan, but at 2990 yen (more than $30).

All in all the normal prices in Japan were quite reasonable, whilst the sale prices were awesome!
