Hey I've just been given a ps2 and wanted to know if it has any value beyond a games console. (I've never owned a playstation before). Can it be used as a media centre or is it easy to hack and play pirated games, and how much would it be worth if I tried to sell it?
Just trying to work out what to do with it, whether i should keep it, gift it, or get rid of it.
DVD player! No use for media server, but as Bossmode stated, just for the nostalgia's worth only, You could play "back up" games but needed it chipped, good luck finding anyone that chips them these days. (thats not to say you could not find anyone)
Don't necessarily need a chip, you can buy swap discs that allow the PS2 to read back-ups.
There is HdLoader and other apps that let you do this and you can attach a hard drive to store isos on. It's much easier with a "fat" older style ps2. No chip required (depending on your model) takes a while to configure though.

Yeah swap disc is much easier than using a chip.
Also look up freemcboot as its an option too. (You might need to find a friend with free mcboot or a chipped console to install it though.)
As for sale value I'm not sure what irl market value is but I've picked up quite a few Slims for $10 and a fat at $5 but slims are quite available and i only bought the fat as I had nohing. Also whether you have the original packaging increases price. I've purchased a silver fat with all original accessories and packaging for $10.
I pick up used games anywhere from $1 to $3 but these are generally common games. Quite a few excellent games to be found for cheap if you look (not that I want the competition ha)
Still good for nostalgia's worth. It's a little less useful nowadays as a result of emulators, but I'm sure you spent many hours with the machine - I'd personally keep it.
