iPads! (Prices and suggestions please!)

What are the cheapest iPads that people have seen?

Looking for an iPad mini because of size…but now seeing iPads that are about the same price. Confused now as to which one to buy.

I'm a photographer, so that's what its main use will be. Also want to use it for eBooks (hence why I want the Mini).

16GB or 32GB, doesn't bother me which.

Best value for money/under $400 is the key for me, cheers!!

Have you looked at tablets made from yumcha chinese brands ? half the price and very good value!

    • I need it to sync seamlessly (apps included) with my Macbook.

So, Apple can shut up and take my money again :)

  • Wait, you will be using an iPad for photography? How does that work?

    • Sorry, whoops! I meant using it as another tool to display my portfolio, and sync with Adobe Lightroom for mobile :)

Oh, haha. I suggest the normal iPad instead of the mini as the prices are, as you say - similar. Also, I'd think that iPad's would be better for reading eBook's because they're bigger. Now, if you want to display your portfolio, a normal iPad would be way better. The iPad mini is just too small, and if someone gave me a look of their artwork on an iPad - it probably wouldn't fit on the screen alone without losing the complete aspect ratio.

The iPad 2 has become really cheap now.. you'll find it at below $300 in most cases. The iPad with retina (maybe you'd want this for displaying your snaps) is generally ~$400. So I'd recommend the iPad 3 (iPad with Retina).

        • You can probably still find The iPad 2 in third party storesm however it has ceased being sold by Apple now as far as I know, and they have replaced the lower end with what was previously known to most as the 4th generation iPad 4 (not the iPad 3). iPad 3 and iPad 4 both have retina screens so that's where it gets confusing.

RRP on the iPad 4 (with retina) 16GB is about $150 less than the iPad Air 16GB

Apple dont actually state that its the iPad 4 being sold on their website but the A6X chip and the lightning adapter give it away. The iPad 3 used an A5X processor and is now very hard to find new anywhere new, although I picked one up a few months ago on gumtree used. If you can find an iPad 3 it is certainly quite a capable device still if you can buy for a cheap price. Mine was $300 for 32gb and cellular.

        • iPad 2 is still available at Big W, but is $374 16GB wifi.

Do you mean secondhand? I'm thinking about buying another iPad (looking for cheap option, rather than latest update).

        • Yeah noticed iPad 2 on "sale" at Big W in their latest catalog, much better off spending the $449 to get the iPad 4 through Apple instead.

and yes I meant to look around for an ipad 3 secondhand.

Do you know of any 10% off sales right now? And do The Good Guys still offer less for cash?

  • Yeah if you're going to use it for photographical purposes then get an iPad with retina display.

One way of saving money is buying the iPad within 60 days of leaving the country because you get all the tax back! I did this and it ended up costing me under $300 for an iPad mini 16gb when they first came out (i also got some staff discount from JB-hifi.. also, i have no idea of the price now..)

I can't help with your query, but just an observation from my own experience; I bought the 16g ipad, and used all the space up really really quickly. If I was to rebuy, I would definitely go for a larger size. Also, the preinstalled software will take up some of that space, however, you may be able to use cloud storage. Here is a recent article giving suggestions on which ipad etc to buy as well as storage info. Good luck!
