Installing data cabling in a unit

Hi Guys,

Does anyone have experience installing data cabling (i.e. cat 5e / 6) in a unit? The parameters are top floor with ceiling cavity access, they can be dropped down the gap between the inner and outer brick walls, and they would exit at established holes in the wall (i.e. powerpoints / phone jack panel). No conduits and no digging through the walls required. Location is Sydney.

What I am looking for is approximate pricing for anyone who has had this done before (obviously by a licensed sparkie).

Thx!

Edit:
I have ethernet over power already but it's pretty patchy, and the local area is built up with units and saturated with wifi…

  • Fantastic post, was wondering the exact same thing for my unit. Thanks for posting this, I didn't even know what profession the job description fell under as a name. I thought the people who did this were called technicians.

  • +1

Got my unit cabled with cat 6 by a sparky two years ago. Existing house they'll usually just charge per hour as there are a lot of variables, eg noggins to be drilled through, access within the roof, etc.

My brother is building a new house, and the standard price for a new dwelling seems to be around $150 per point.
Highly recommend you buy a network cable tester and test the points yourself once they're done. Had to get my sparky back cause he missed a few wires on 2 points which would have slowed throughput.

  • check out this whirlpool post for some tips. and a sparky recommendation.

  • Throw it up on AirTasker and see what offers you get.
