Prepaid credit cards that work with PayPal?

Does anyone know of any prepaid credit cards that I can buy that work with PayPal? I usually use the Woolworths Money Single load Prepaid MasterCard but lately whenever I try it, I get a notice telling me I can't use prepaid cards to pay anymore. I know for a fact that a year or two ago, it was definitely possible. I'm guessing something must have changed in that time. I generally order from international sites, so perhaps that's the problem, but I don't know.

I use prepaid cards for websites or services that I don't trust with my personal details, or my personal PayPal account. It's easy for me to walk into a Woolworths (or whereever), pay for the card (no ID necessary), load it up and I'm set.

Assuming that the Woolworths prepaid credit card no longer works, does anyone have any suggestions for prepaid credit cards (that don't require ID) that definitely do work with PayPal for single payments?

EDIT: It's been a while since I last tried, but the error message that I received from PayPal was something similar to:

"The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number."

  • To be completely honest, PayPal is a very secure payment gateway, especially if you set up two-step authentication (sms message required to do most functions). I wouldn't be losing sleep over using my normal debit mastercard or even credit card on it.

I don't think paying the fees to either initially purchase the card, or reload the card (in some cases) is worth it.

You'd be amazed at the amount of protection you have from:

    • Your bank: any unauthorised transactions can be reversed if you lodge a claim (and police report in most cases)
    • PayPal: they are pretty set on siding with buyers.
    • As mentioned earlier, 2 step authentication. With this, you are physically required to have your phone handy to make a payment over PayPal - so even if you get hacked or whatever, a potential hacker cannot do anything with your account

If you insist on getting a prepaid card - yes, most of them act as a normal credit/debit card and paypal should accept them. There may be an issue with your card if you can't make paypal payments.

    • Dude, please read the OP.

We know all that bumcombe you posted.

That was my suggestion, rather than wasting money/time getting a prepaid card out of paranoia of using paypal with your normal card.

        • As ianyelts said, I don't want to use my actual PayPal account.

I only want a prepaid card. I want to be able to walk into a store, buy it and use it online.

That said, there's no issue with my Woolworths card. I can use it everywhere… except PayPal. I used to be able to use it on PayPal, but lately it gets rejected so they've clearly changed things.

  • In order for paypal to confirm the card, you need to be able to somehow access a statement function of the card, because as part of the initial authentication process, paypal will make a small transfer with a code attached to the transaction description that you need to review on your statement, and enter that code to confirm your card. I'm guessing because the prepaid cards doesn't have that function hence rejected by paypal. I have recently linked my Qantas cash card to my paypal account, but I suppose that needs some personal details too.

As Brezzo stated above, you have a few layers of securities before the payment goes through, and I'm guessing when you make a purchase over the internet, your real name and address would be "given away" anyway during the process, as you need a name and address for the delivery. I'm happy to use a loadable card like Qantas cash or a dedicated account with a debit card with minimal balance kept for online purchases.

Not true, i have added prepaid CBA mastercard giftcards recently with no issues. Your paypal status might be preventing you from added certain types of cards.

      • Probably as I'm only a casual paypal user, I probably use like 50 bux a year on it :o)

Woolworths Prepaid Mastercards no longer work
Westpac Prepaid Visa Gift Cards no longer work

    Do

    Qantas Prepaid MASTERCARD
    and
    Virgin Prepaid MASTERCARD

work with PayPal right now, this second?

Can someone please try above and report back.

    • Is Qantas Prepaid Mastercard same thing as the Qantas Cash card? That's the one I used and worked

      • Does the Qantas Cash card require signing up, or can I go in store and buy one?

        • No it's linked to your Qantas frequent flyer account which I guess contains some personal details

        • Oh ok. Thanks for the info :)

    • A VCARD sounds like it could do the trick. I've never heard of them before, so I'll check them out. Thanks! :)
