Nintendo Wii Questions from a n00b

Hi All,

I've just bought the Wii Console Bundle that's on sale at Kmart right now for $99: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140466

I know nothing of gaming and have no interest. I bought this for someone else who really enjoys them so I'm wondering if people might be able to help me out buying any accessories etc? Any cheap stores/locations I can get them at? Timing is not an issue, I can wait for a few weeks for items to be posted.

I would think I will need to buy more Wii remote plus (and also nuncuck and wheel maybe?) so that multi-player would be possible. Not sure what the cheapest place to get them will be. Or what accessories I should look to buy.

I can also see by doing a quick ebay search that there seems to be lots of generic brands. Are generic brands OK quality or would people insist on buying authentic accessories even if it costs a bit more?

I also read that you can mod the Wii. Is that a softmod or hardmod? Or do you get to choose between the two? If so which one is better/easier/cheaper? I did a quick Google but lots and lots of unrelated or outdated posts keep coming up so if someone can point me to some guides or reliable information on modding the Wii then I would very much appreciate it. I assume the mod will make me lose the warranty and I want be able to apply official Nintendo updates? Then again, from what I read, Nintendo is fazing out the Wii in favour of the Wii U, so are there really going to be any more updates to the firmware?

Ebay also seems to sell some recharging stations like this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2x-2800mAh-Rechargeable-Battery-D…

Are these recharging stations decent and worth the money? I assume normal batteries probably die often and having a rechargeable solution would help a lot. Again, not sure about anything so reaching out to the community to see what you guys think.

Any and all help will be much appreciated!

Cheers

    Hey there,

Hopefully I'll be able to answer all your questions in enough detail.

Any cheap stores/locations I can get them at?

I would think I will need to buy more Wii remote plus (and also nuncuck and wheel maybe?) so that multi-player would be possible. Not sure what the cheapest place to get them will be. Or what accessories I should look to buy.

Personally, I used eBay to get my accessories. I got myself an extra remote (with motion plus) and nun chuck, and a couple of steering wheels for Mario Kart. I just got some generic products off eBay and they have worked with no issues for me. If you can wait a couple of weeks to save a few dollars, even better, but buying them off a local seller is just as swell.

I also read that you can mod the Wii. Is that a softmod or hardmod? Or do you get to choose between the two? If so which one is better/easier/cheaper?

I suppose there are some places that can hardmod a Wii console for you (I don't actually know), but softmodding is quite easily done, and it is free. Yes, this will most probably void your warranty, but with a softmod you can get any Nintendo system update (and I doubt there will be any future updates anyway).
Softmodding on the Wii is quite good in my opinion as it gives you the option to play DVD's, and you are able to make back-up copies of your games (as well as getting games for free, but I don't wish to talk about that). In order to softmod, you will however need an SD card and a USB/HDD, both formatted for the Wii system.
This is the tutorial I used from memory: http://youtu.be/b-QwfCHjI9Q

Are these recharging stations decent and worth the money?

I can't help you with that sorry as I don't have one. I personally just buy the cheap 24 packs of AA batteries from Bunnings whenever I need them.

      He TitrisMango,

Thanks very much for going through it all and answering each of my queries. I appreciate it. I'll keep on ebaying and go ahead with softmod!

The recharging stations are good. I bought one from eBay for $8 including the batteries. They do their job effectively. And moreover it is convenient to use the charging station instead of changing the batteries frequently.

    +1 with the softmod.

backing up games to HDD is so much less worrisome than optical media for kids. Plus add the fact that there is no changing discs needed to change games.

    • Very interesting. The over use of Flash put me off a bit but I'm good for now, I've gone with the softmod option, which tbh wasn't too difficult. All the ebay ordering is done for the accessories, so now it's just a waiting game.

  • Buy the Wii U accessory.
