Baby night lamp

Hello everyone,

We are about to have our first baby in about 3 weeks time…wife suggested that we have a night lamp or bedside lamp when baby wakes up in the middle of the night for feeding etc….we dont have a bedside lamp and the light switch is far away from where wife and baby is going to be so need some ideas… I was thinking about going for a remote controlled lamp but ebay doesnt seem to have any that suits….what did and didnt work for you guys? any advise on what you would have done would be helpful…. thanks for your ideas in advance…

We just use a bedside lamp and leave it on all night. We use a low wattage bulb so it's not too bright (8w I think it was)and it sits outside the hallway on a timer to turn off at 5am. If you really must get a remote, an option could be one of those power point remote from Aldi but I'm not sure if they still have it or how much it was.

I love these, we bought one before our son was born and have bought a couple as gifts (no bargain though sorry) - but they are remote.

Just about any light you buy will seem like one of those huge stadium lights when it's the dead of the night.

We've tried a few things, it really comes down to room/house set-up.

Current one at the moment is this:

We have our DD's cot in our bedroom (as per SIDS recommendations) so don't really need much light as it is literally only a step to get to our DD and then one back into bed for her milk. But it can be handy to have a bit of light for some things. We keep the light in the room with us, it's positioned so that when we walk near the door/cot it goes on automatically (it's just sitting on top of a chest of drawers). We have a bit of muslin over the lights to diffuse them to a softer glow. If I had the option I'd probably put it on the wall down low, pointing at the ground - as we've done in the past in the hallway for our older child - but my daughter just keeps ripping it off the wall and playing with it when it's in reach.

  • Buy an led Eveready night light/portable light I have two that came in a pack, use rechargeable AA batteries and Iam sure they are sold at Bunnings. They are about the size of a palm are square with round corners, grey in colour and have a single led light inside you push on the middle of the light to turn on and off. I couldn't find the light in Bunnings website to show you but Iam sure I have seen them. Its evonomical $15-20 (2) not too bright, its portable and it has a sticky strip at the back if you wish to stick it to a wall, etc.I could send u a picture of mine but I don't know how to do it?

  • Firstly…. Best of luck to you and your family!

To answer your question. I'm 11 weeks into my first baby and I've been happy with the Duux baby light projector. Its cheap, uses led lighting so never gets warm, and has two light options- 1 a projector which beams a night sky onto the ceiling in different colours and 2 white nightlight which gives a nice low level of light, enough for my wife to get about and breast feed whilst I sleep like a big fat baby next to her.

When our baby is old enough this will follow her into the nursery. So far I'm very happy with it.

  • I am going to go against the pack and say use no light at all! To get baby in a good night time routine, you go in the room in the dark, feed & change nappy and place them back to bed. I've always used the hallway light or adjoining room to give some filtered light though so you can see just what you need. I've done this with both bubs and both sleep great. If they had light they think its time to get up if you know what I mean.

I do still have a dimmable floor light for emergencies if I really did need to turn a light on.
