  • oos at time of picking ie. few hours before delivery

I had issues with my local Woolies substituting products when I'd specified no substitutions (they'd put different flavours in, different brands etc).

I also had issues with being given short dated stock. ie. Delivery was 7pm one night and the food had a use by date of the next day.

I also had regular mistakes (such as getting given diced beef when I'd asked for lamb, given the wrong sized block of cheese etc).

Honestly, after getting into it with them, it sounds like a lot of the quality is dependent on the person who stock picks. Chances are you got a dud in the meat and cold section who didn't know where the stuff was and couldn't be arsed finding it so just ticked it as out of stock. They get the job done a lot quicker that way.

I've stopped online shopping as our local service is frustrating and lousy - I spend more time chasing up refunds and correcting mistakes than I would do if I just went and got the stuff from the shop myself.

  • I often get out of stock items marked. Sometimes I still get them, sometimes I get extra stuff I didn't order. Generally I just get the refund as I shop weekly, sometimes I get them to redeliver the next day.

Most of the time they are alright, as I hate going to the shop I will continue to use the service.

  • That is a lot of items to be out of stock from a small order, but we've had a similar number of items absent from larger ones.

Whole Easter period thing may have played a role with your order. Some people usually on deck, instead away with kids over the school holiday period. Other likely stuff-ups resulting from interruptions over the period to the normal warehouse delivery routines.

Having said that - and we've had plenty of irritating out-of-stock item issues with both Woolworths and Coles - a bigger issue for us are items that have come back into stock after having been out (phone calls to relevant supermarket to confirm), but they don't return in a timely manner as orderable items from the website.

We've switched certain (sometimes several hundred dollar) orders from one supermarket to the other at the last minute on the strength of it.

Both supermarkets are offenders. Despite polite phone calls to the supermarkets themselves - or via their head offices on occasion - and despite reassurances that online managers will 'fix the problem', we rarely bother to ring anymore such is the strike rate of actually seeing anything get done quickly, or sometimes, done at all.

  • that's certainly a lot of stuff to be out of stock.

last time i had an out of stock item on special they called me on my mobile and told me they could get the missing items after a few more days so i agreed and they rescheduled the delivery.

i've had problems with their 1.5kg min mince packs being < 1.5kg. when you buy online you pay per pack, not per kg.

I made an order online because I thought that was the best way to get the easiyo maker (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/141506) but that ended up being the one item that was cancelled. So I got several packs of yogurt mix but not the maker.

    • Damn I meant to +1 because you made me chuckle but I hit the wrong button, sorry!

    • Nope definitely not the best way to buy something thats on a super sale… Your order isn't collected until right before you get it delivered, so people who walked into the store would have got the available stocks.

      • Actually, one of the main reasons we buy online as much as we do is because it can dramatically INCREASE your chances of getting an on-special item, or the actual quantity of the 'on special' items that you're after.

My general gripe in the post higher up the thread aside, the key is to delay delivery so that the items on special in your order are no longer on special online or instore, and to allow enough time for sold-out specials to be restocked.

Works very well. Most of the time.

        • Are you saying that the price charged is based on order date rather than shipping date?

For example, lets say you placed an order on Tuesday for half priced specials and asked for the delivery to be on Thursday. If the product was out of stock by Tuesday then the store has a chance to restock on Wednesday and have stock on Thursday for your delivery.

I guess this is a good idea if you can get it to work that way.

        • As per your first sentence. That's how it works - even with Coles where your credit card payment isn't actually processed until the day of delivery. Mobile EFTPOS also an option with Coles.

Extra info: With Coles, you're restricted to locking in a delivery date (up to 2 weeks from order date. Changing the date means cancelling your order, which means that you lose any specific specials that you've locked in. The (still or new) current specials then apply when you re-do the order - if you do.

Different with Woolworths. You can, after specifying a delivery date (up to 1 week), amend the delivery date, ongoing, without cancelling the order.
Huge advantage for us relative to Coles online.

  • We did an online order with Woolworths using gift cards. Received out of stock notification. Multiple phone calls and nearly 2 weeks later finally received code for store credit (online only) at the supermarket with 3 month expiry even though our gift card could be used for 11.5 months at any Woolworth owned store. Place another order using code. Received another out of stock notification. Four days and no credit and no correspondence other than initial out of stock email. You would think a company as large as them would have a live stock system in place!

    • Both I.T. departments have work to do, particularly with stock levels on shelves relative to orders in-train.

I have never used a Wish card on the Woolworths site, but always figured that if I did that I would try to use the full card, or remainder on same, as part payment on a largish order - so as to guarantee the complete using up of the card. The way to go, I think.
