Good point, but Vodafone still uses 900 Mhz for non-urban towers [1] so 3G coverage still wouldn't be great outside urban areas?

I don't know of anything better for the price. It doesn't support the support the 900MHz band used by Optus and Vodafone 3G so it would have to rely on the 2100Mhz channel which may be more congested. Also although it is a 8 Core phone, those cores are all A7s, so it wouldn't be as fast as the "BIG.little" phones that also have faster A15 cores. However, this is to be expected on an under $200 phone.
