Favourite shaving soaps for wet/DE shaving?

Hi fellow ozbargainers,

Just wondering what your favourite shaving soaps are or what ones you've tried and would/wouldn't recommend.

There seems to be plenty out there on mensbiz, pureman, ebay but what do you make of the Truefitt & Hills, Col. Conks, Taylor of old bond streets, D.R. Harris and e Shave's on the market?

P.S.
I'm a bit of a newbie and am still on my first soap, the Sensitive Proraso soap but am loving the new ritual.

Cheers.

For the ozbargainer, I'd have to recommend proraso eucalyptus. I used to use TOBS but it is a bit expensive. Out of curiosity, what razor are you using btw? DE shaving is pretty fun :D

    • I've been thinking about trying the Proraso White, looks like a decent one for sensitive skin from what ive read! We'll see how it goes!

Is this the one that you bought OP?

      • Yeah, I've been using the white Proraso sensitive soap with a restored Schick Krona and testing out a bunch of blades.

So far the Personna blades are the best from the 4 brands I've tried. (Feathers, Merkur, Derby and Personnas)

Got a really nice synthetic brush cheap while in the US and lathers quite well, once I learnt the technique and upgraded from the $4 Safeway brush.

    • I'm seconding Proraso Eucalyptus. Feels so good.

Another vote for Proraso here. In the past I have used Trumpers soaps, they're much more expensive and I reckon harder to work up a decent lather with. The Proraso is easy to lather up and a tube lasts for ages. If you don't already get it from Mensbiz and use code 'BB2014' for 15% off.

The Proraso pre shave is good too.

Get a Razorpit razor blade sharpener for about $30 from the Shaver Shop.

Best shaving investment you will ever make.

I use the same blade for up to four to five months - because Razorpit easily cleans the front surface of the blade.

Excellent product. The savings in blades quickly add up.

Excellent birthday, wedding, Christmas etc present for guys who have everything.

I've been using mine for about three years and can't imagine shaving without it.

I use Taylor's of Bond st sandalwood or shaving shop cream bowl and Feather blades. If you want to make a huge lather get an Omega pro48 boar brush. Only around $20 - 25 . Takes a while to break in but one of my better brushes. Good luck

+1 on the Omega Professional boar brush. I use one, and I never feel the need for an expensive badger brush.

Smells like a pig's arse when you first use it though :(

man the initial smell is sooooo bad. but yeah omega (Y)

Shaving soaps made with tallow (dead animals).

IMO, Tabac is simply the best.

But for the Ozbargainer, it's hard to go past Arko. This will last you more than half a decade of daily shaves:

    You're welcome :)

    • Of course the best soap is made from human.

      • The trouble is, it's no longer socially acceptible to boil them up.

        • Don't let hippie morals get between you and a good product. Besides which, you can just raid the bio-waste bins at liposuction clinics for your raw materials :)

  • Wow I just realised despite shaving for years I know very little about it (using a Gillette foam tube and razor). Can someone point me in a direction of a good blade, brush and soap? Price isn't really a huge concern as long as it isn't insane. From this thread it seems that the proraso eucalyptus is one to try?

    • "DE wer shaving is the way to go!
      http://www.artofmanliness.com/2008/01/04/how-to-shave-like-y…

I picked up a few DE razors a while back from some 2nd hand stores (Salvos, etc.) disinfected them and restored them back to life and they work a heck of a lot better than my old Mach 3 and considerably cheaper too!

You have to spend a bit of money initially but in the long run the blades are as cheap as and a much closer shave too (meaning less frequent shaves).

Checkout Badger & Blade for some links to Aussie vendors and use the discounts.

I've personally only used Kinetic Blue but found their service quite good.

It turns into a bit of a ritual after a while. The lather, the shave, the aftershave."

  • Go to Aesop and ask about their shaving products. They usually give you a free sample kit with instructions and a sample of each of the products. It is a pretty full on process (srub, serum, toner, post shave, moisturise etc) but the end result was the best shave I have ever had.

I ended up buying the Aesop Shaving Serum which looks expensive but lasts a long time. I still have heaps of the sample kits that I use when travelling.
