Getting into Arduino

I'm looking at getting into Arduino (just for fun) but I'm not a 100% sure on the best way to start. I know I'm looking at an Uno to begin with, so I guess my first question is - do I need to get an official Arduino one for ~$40, or am I just as well off with a compatible one, i.e. a Funduino Uno for ~$14. What, if any, are the downsides to the latter?

Aside from that, I'm basically looking for input from the intelligent minds at Ozbargain, as to where they've found the best prices on Arduino parts, and what you think the best way to get started in Arduino is.

  • Raspberry pi! :)
Sorry, i've had a pi for 6 months or so and have had much fun with it!

    • Yeah I own a Raspberry Pi - it's a totally different device. I'm looking to have a play with Arduino.

  • +1

Almost any compatible arduino will do the job. Take a look at starter packages or just buy board with a few sensors and LEDs/ displays to start with. Don't forget resistors, prototyping board and wires for it.

As for where to buy - DX is still the most popular place as you can see reviews of products there(don't use au warehouse) or just search on eBay.

  • I just got one of these http://www.banggood.com/UNO-Basic-Starter-Learning-Kit-Upgra…
really good value for anyone else thinking about having a crack at it. Small investment to see where you want to take it as it has enough things to keep you busy for a while. I had to try tone it down as as usual I wanted to buy heaps of stuff but as I have no experience with it I thought best to hold off so I can find out what I really need to build the things I want to make not just the things I think I would need. For $30 it really is a fantastic educational tool.
