I am now using internet explorer, but can not get on to my normal pages using Google chrome, anyone able to give me advice, as the modem seems to be OK or I would not be able to connect at all? I am not very good with computers, have tried system restore back to a month or so ago, but still Google is not working - help

I wouldn't touch IE for a while due to recent VML 0-day exploit.
As of Chrome — try Incognito Mode first with all extensions disabled. Otherwise try uninstall / re-install.
sometimes I get this error as well, it seems to be a bug on chrome because both firefox and IE work, when chrome doesn't
Uninstalling, resintalling might work for you but hasn't for me, also sometimes it is occurs for specific webpages, e.g. facebook, youtube, pretty much any site. They work fine if i try in the other browsers.
Personally i just gave up on trying to fix it, looked all over the net, no real fixes and don't think it's my extensions(adblock and google docs are only active). Incognito sometimes but rarely worksProbably a bug in chrome, might be but unlikely a virus
Suggest just use firefox/ your second favourite browser and check back on chrome, usually works again after a couple hoursThe IE11 patch is available on Windows Update this morning.
do you have any extensions in Chrome? they could be causing the problem. you can disable them or go into incognito mode to see it if starts working again.
personally I'd use Firefox if Chrome isn't working, it has greater compatibility and less security issues than IE.

What error appears when you try to load a page in Chrome? Sounds like a weird problem, I'm pretty sure Chrome uses the same Windows DNS/Proxy settings as Internet Explorer to function, so if IE is working and Chrome isn't I'm assuming it's a Chrome issue.
Possibly try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome.
