Suggestions for an affordable light laptop

Hi Guys,
My parents need a new laptop, after their Lenovo SL500 died last week.

This time they want something small and light….something preferably comparable to macbook pro(13inch) in size and weight.

What do you think is a good brand? asus or lenovo or acer or HP or something.
and how much do u think i shud expect them to cost. I am looking at around $600, possible?

Laptop will be mainly (90% of the time) will be used to surf internet and watch movies. Do you think I3 will be enuf for that?

I would like them to buy macbook air or pro….but teaching them mac osx will be a hard task.

Also, if the laptop comes with windows 8, is it easy to install windows 7 on it as they are comfortable with it since they have been using it.

Any suggestion or deals will be appreciated.

Thanks.

  • You know it's more expensive to buy a laptop with Windows 7 on it than one with 8, if my quick look at what's available at ebay is any guide.

  • This or similar questions come up frequently.

Have a look at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/136277 where consensus seems to be the Surface Pro or

  • The changes introduced by Microsoft with the latest Win 8.1 upgrade, make it easy to set up the new operating system to open to the familiar Win 7 desktop, so the learning curve for your parents' transition would be minimal. There's third-party software available to restore the traditional menu system too, so all that's missing is the aero aspects of the interface.
