LG LED TV >2YRS old defect. Possibility of replacement or repair?

I have a 47inch LG TV which a few days ago started to display long, black lines across the bottom of the screen. A few white/yellow pixels along the same line and a faint white vertical line.

As stated in the title, the TV is about 2 years, 3 months old, so as far as I can tell the 12 month warranty is no longer applicable. After doing a little Googling, I came across something about a statutory guarantee which offers protection even well after 12 months. (Section 54 of the Australian Consumer Law).

The TV cost me about $1200 at the time of purchase and a little over 2 years doesn't seem like a reasonable life expectancy of the device given its price. So, what are my chances that LG would repair or replace the TV?

Has anyone had any luck getting a device fixed or replaced this long after the 12 month warranty? What are the likely arguments or excuses might they try on in order to fob me off.

I'd prefer to be prepared before I call so any help and insight Ozbargainers can offered would be appreciated. :)

You might want to have a try claiming it under "statutory warranty". This operates independently of manufacturer's warranty.

    • my tv could not be repaired and i was given a refund …….

  • You should be able to get a repair/ contact LG or your retailer.

Read this for some background http://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees

So at least you sound like you know what you're talking about - Be firm but pleasant.

If push comes to shove, tell them you will contact the ACCC - and ask for their name and their supervisors name. ( don't be a rude though, they are just doing their job )

  • Grab your receipt and call the retailer. Email them your story and a pic of the fault if possible.
It is the retailers responsibility to arrange assessment through LG but they will most likely let LG deal with you directly.

LG will most likely have the set assessed at your cost and then refund that to you after if proven to be a manufactures fault. From there they will negotiate repair/replace at a discount or partial refund.

Just went through all this with a under 2 y/o Panasonic set that died (the second one)… it took over 6 weeks to get sorted… very frustrating.

The DOFT and ACCC cannot do anything … if you threaten with going to them you will get laughed at.
If a respectable approach does not resolve the matter then you have to take the retailer to court (tribunal).
