Citibank credit card problem

I applied for the zero fee for life citibank credit card. All went well, received the card and activated it yesterday over the phone. The guy said I could use it, what my credit limit was, etc. When I called them up today to put a travel alert on my card, they said my card cannot be activated anymore so I would have to apply again???? They couldn't tell me the reason behind it. My card is useless after 1 day of being activated?

I haven't used the card for anything and all info I gave them was legit.

Anyone have this problem?

  • You sure they didn't misunderstand and thought you wanted to activate the card, which was already active.

    • Yeah, I told them it was already activated yesterday. They understood that but said I couldn't use my card anymore and told me to re-apply and can't even tell me the reason

  • it is visible in online banking?

    • Won't allow me to register for online banking

  • Have you tried using it? Buy something small and see what happens.

    • umm Don't they always shut the card down if you do a one or two dollar transaction (so i read about c/card scams)

      • Who knows? Try to buy something not small and see what happens. It may simply be a matter of crossed wires or miscommunication. The simplest way of telling is to use the card. If it rejects after being correctly activated there is more to the story. Escalate until you get the real deal, maybe they issued this card in error?

No. How else can you use it to buy something cheap?

      • I think small Internet transactions ring alarm bells, not in person ones. Otherwise they'd have a lot of noise from people buying coffees.

Hey this is Ozbargain where do you buy a one or two dollar coffee..besides 7/11 ?

        • Well I'm thinking of 3 or 4 bucks. I'm actually surprised the cafes handle such small purchases, it must cost them a bit.

        • Damn shops round here are ripoffs, getting bored making my own.

Barista coffee can get expensive, one a day will come up to 1k a year, but I need one to get through the arvo.

    • Might try this

  • My theory is that the guy who activated my card made an error or whatever

Subscribed to see what happens. Keep us posted, OP. Strange little situation there! Would it be possible to call up again and ask to speak to a manager on duty to discuss what happened to your card?
