Not sure if issued wrong parking fine

Hi good people of OZBargain, I have come upon you to seek the your collective wisdom and right the wrongs that I have been (wrongfully?) accused of. Seriously speaking, I got a parking fine about 2 weeks back. I paid for 15 mins for a street side parking spot in Melbourne CBD but went over time by about 10 mins. Came back, saw a parking attendant guy, asked for leniency, shot down mercilessly. I just accepted my luck and blamed my own tardiness. But I was just looking at the ticket again, and realised that my offence was stated as "Fail to pay fee and obey instructions on sign/ meter/ ticket etc. Road Rule 207 (2) No Valid Ticket Displayed)". Fine amount is $72.

My questions now are:

1) Was I booked under the wrong offence, and thus wrongly penalised? (not sure if there is a difference in fine amounts)

If so,

2) I have since thrown away the parking ticket, how can I prove my case?

Or should I just suck it up and pay? Seriously damn broke now though.

You didnt have a valid ticket displayed. Just pay the fine and move on

I don't think you were booked under the wrong offence? Your ticket wasn't valid for the period you parked.

    • Yup thanks, you were right. I misunderstood the terminology.

Come on…parking inspector issues wrong ticket in Melbourne CBD… not a chance!

What part of the fine description do you think is incorrect? Just curious.

Personally I reckon you've been given the correct offence description thingy. You've been fined for those 10 minutes you were parked without a ticket. The time you spent parked there with a valid ticket is irrelevant. The failure to obey instructions would relate to how, for those 10 minutes, you did not pay for a ticket as needed, IMO.

Bad luck. Careful with those parking meters next time. Inspectors are like hawks!

    • Thanks, I get it now. I used to live in Singapore, and if you had a parking ticket (or parking coupon as we call it) but went over time , you would be penalised a different amount than if you didn't have a ticket at all. I think the time frame for going over time would be within either 15 or 30 mins from the expiry of the last valid ticket. Beyond that, you would be fined for not having a ticket at all.

That's why I was confused. Thanks for addressing my question!

You failed to pay. (for the extra time)
You failed to obey the instructions (time limit).
You didn't display a valid ticket. (it ran out).

    • Cool, thanks for breaking it down!
