Renegotiate Optus $115 per month bundle to $95

Hi in case you are with Optus on the broadband/home phone bundle (which is pretty much unlimited data and calls)…AND uncontracted to them

This will work if your current deal with them is no longer under 12 or 24 month contract - so check that first, but the current offering is $115 per month (you may be paying more it used to be $130) ring them and say "Hey TPG and aaNet do it for $79.95 so what gives?" - with a bit of persistence they will discount it by $20 (recontracting for 12 months)

They will pull out stops to retain customers. Their byline is "yes" after all…I did it and a mate did it just last week no probs. (I would go to TPG (and probably will after this contract) except I have to migrate email accounts).

Hoping this helps and saves some people some hard earned shekels (12 X 20 = $240 saved for the year)

I can confirm this works, I have recently called Optus retention and said Belong currently offers 80 bux per month for 250GB download with unlimited calls and no contract, can they match it. The rep did offer me discount on two of their plans, one being the 200GB and the other one was the unlimited plan, I can't recall exactly how much it was but it was similar to what OP has suggested. Although I'm still a little unconvinced, thinking of giving Belong a go.

    • I had the same options available to me. Only, Optus gave me a 30 mbps cable line while belong adsl2+ came to roughly 3 mbps. Shouldnt hurt to haggle nonetheless.

I still think some of the month to month plans from budget providers are better, Optus internet isn't any better anyway, so why pay more for it? That's assuming you are getting ADSL, I don't know much about cable internet.

  • i agree Optus isn't any better - I guess I am posting for those who need to stay with Optus for any reason - for me I need to stick with them for now as I have established email addresses - once I migrate from those email addresses I will probably jump ship.

  • Thanks OP have been on the Optus bundle for years and never looked into an alternative. Will have to consider it or negotiate a discount at least if there are cheaper options out there. Cheers

  • So who is better then optus in terms of service. Any particular deal.

    • I'm very interested to try belong https://www.belong.com.au/ delivered on Telstra network.

      • just checked belong for 80 per month it is broadband only and 250GB - TPG are unlimited everything for same price including landline/phonecalls - if you want data only I would expect cheaper

        • Belong 80/month plan includes unlimited local/13/1300 calls, and month to month contract only, and supposedly delivered on Telstra network. If you click the ? next to Belong Bundle 81, it pops up a dialogue box outlining details

  • I'm currently on the $110 deal for 500GB data and the Speed Pack.

Would be nice to go Unlimited w/ Speedpack.

Anyone done this? What deal did you get?

  • Just talked to Optus Retention dept and they offered me the $95 Unltd plan but they also offered that I could stay on my current 500GB Fusion Plan w/ free premium speed pack (normally $110) and they would apply a $15 month-to-month discount and also give me 13/1300 numbers included free (previously was not included).

So I took that one (can always change later if I want to contract for another 12 months to the newer Unlimited plans).

  • Optus is rubbish. Don't bother joining their network. Been a loyal customer for over 10 years and for the past 3, the quality of service has deteriorated. One example is the router they provided disconnects every half hour. They won't replace it unless we call out one of their technicians to check the network. We've had several come out, and every time they do, they find a way of making it worse. Save yourself the trouble and find a different provider.

I had a similar issue with Optus cable about five years ago. It turned out to be a fault on the cable from the street to our house (something to do with water in the cable hence the intermittent fault). The technician fixed it and it has been fine ever since so it is worth getting them out to take a look. They are actually a pretty decent service provider in my experience. (I'm a qualified IT Consultant so speaking objectively from mine and client's experience)

I've used TPG in the past and they were good too. For cost a company who doesn't advertise much like Exetel would be better value with local calls thrown in through a pennytel voip number or other similar service.

Their unlimited plan is 39.95 per month for unlimited data or 29.99 for 500GB. I'm planning on moving over to them. The only thing is that the cable service from Optus (and Telstra) are way faster (upto approx 4 times) than the ADSL only providers 24mbps versus 100mbps on the fastest plans. Also we don't have a telstra line so would probably need one installed ($299 fee) before switching to a naked adsl provider.

Internet service all depends on line contention so how many people are sharing the same service (neighbours or people in the locality etc). Some of the budget providers may share 20:1 so in peak usage the 20mbps may drop to 1 if all 20 are using it at the same time. Higher quality business connections may have contention of 1:1 so you get the full 20mbps all the time. Cheaper services may have 50:1 contention ratios. I haven't found a chart of these by isp but it also depends on who else is using that service in the area.

  • What a joke.

Called Optus this afternoon after my 24 months mobile contract finish and change to sims only plan with data share. All was good and finally, since I was with optus fusion 120gb for a few years, and I wouldnt mind paying $25 dollar for unlimited internet and calls so I asked the CSR to transfer me to the broadband to make the switch.

And at the moment, you get a 10% discount on broadband bundle if you also have a mobile plan with optus over $30, so in principle I only have to pay $103.5 for the $115 - 10% for the unlimited data bundle.

As I saw this post earlier so I asked the CSR to see if there was a better offer than just 10% as I have been with optus over 10 years. She then said she will talk to the retention team about the situation and then transferred me to the retention team afterwards.

As soon as I was transferred to the retention team, I explained the whole situation again, I have broadband bundle and looking for upgrade. Currently have mobile plan over $60, I am looking for something under $100, what is the best you can do. And what do you think?!? ROFL, the lady in the retention team put me on hold for a few minutes then come back to tell me,the best we can do for me is take $10 off from the monthly fee. I then asked her whether this $10 is offered in addition to the 10% discount.

She went for clarification and come back to say, sorry, it is only either offer. The system does not allow them to stack 2 discounts offer. (In my mind, I said WTF!!!! Are you nuts?!?! Does that make sense!??!?).

I then calmly told her this does not make sense to me. As I already have discounts for $11.5 and now you are offering me a $10 discount which is worst off. She kept saying this is the best she can do. And the system did not allow her to enter 2 discount offers at once.

I started to get a bit impatient as I have been on the phone for over 20 minutes (just with the retention team, not including the time with the other dept beforehand.) I then raised my voice a bit and say

"Are you telling me now that, without talking to you I can have $11.5 discount. But after talking to you, I can only have $10 discount. Right?!? What is the logic here? Are you trying to retain me as a customer or simply telling me to go away with optus. Get your manager on the line and let me know the reasons why I have to waste 40 minutes with you here."

She went away again and come back, now saying the best optus can do now is $20 the monthly fee for 12 months. I said ok then let do that. (I believe I could possibly push a bit further but I am already tired on the phone, and that is something I expected anyway.) So, ending up with $95 per month for 12 months.

But, to be honestly, optus is really getting worse for the last few years. I used to like them, with the mobile, better than the others apart from Telstra. But my recent experience with Vodafone was much much better than dealing with optus. If not only telstra and optus are offering data sharing sime, I would have gone from optus. Once other providers offer the same services, I will have leave optus as soon as I can.
