  • Someone is bound to comment that EVO is better value.

It's a good price. But still expensive. I guess I don't really need 512GB of it.

Looks like someone already did ;)

    • I was going to say this deal obviously isn't everyone's cup of tea, and the $/GB ratio is better on some of the lower capacity drives, but for people wanting a large SSD it seems decent enough.

      • By lower capacity drives are you referring to 840 PROs?

        • Scratch what I said, late night brain isn't working. Was thinking more the EVO pricing :-)

  • Is EVO better value?

    • is EVO better technically?

      • No. Pro is faster.

      • is EVO better technically?

On the outside, all SSDs look pretty much the same.
Inside, EVO is TLC and is technically worse (in terms of endurance) compared to PRO's MLC. SLC is best but most expensive and hence are mostly used in caches.

I read in a benchmark that you can write 300GB a day to EVO and it will still be useable after 5 years. That's more than enough for all but servers. No one writes 300GB a day to their SSD.

        • I read in a benchmark that you can write 300GB a day to EVO and it will still be useable after 5 years.

Show me benchmarks which model realistic scenarios where the SSD is 3/4 full and where test data is not written in continuous and contiguous manner and then I might take them seriously.

    • I believe that EVO gives you a better bang for your buck.

I'm always so tempted to get these drives. It's nice the price keeps getting lower (slowly). I'll probably wait until it's a little lower for now though.

Evo better value and 840 pro to be replaced with 850 series come July … Expect more discounts :)

Samsung Pros SSD are great drives. We deployed/gambled with them (3 x 128gb - raid1 & a hotspare ssd for os & mimer databases, along with 5 x 1tb sas hdd for file server & data) on a few Dell Poweredge r720s since Feb 2013 and the ssds are still 96%,97%,100% healthy. These servers are ON 24h7d with heavy use during the day.

  • Pros uses MLC while Evo uses TLC if that matters to anyone, MLC have at least 5x the lifespan.

  • IMO Samsung Pro are the fastest SSD.
