Advice On Buying Used Cars

Hi OBzers

Just wondering if you guys and girls can give me any advice on buying a used car. I'm a younger driver but my dad has decided to buy me a car. I told him I'd rather buy a used car considering how much they depreciate.

We've bought a Toyota Camry SVU? before - drives quite well.

Basically I was wondering where I should look?
What to do before and after e.g. checking their rego or inspecting the car?
Where to search for more info
Price ranges
What to be careful of

I'm looking for a sedan - for work use. Nothing fancy. Nothing bigger, nothing smaller and around 20k maximum.

  • if you are using it for work then why buy a car around $20k?

    is work paying for fuel?

I should prob edit that. I meant travelling to and from work. Not really for work.

  • Have a look at the clearance prices on the OPEL range (New and Demo).

    Search on Car Sales.

Might want to clarify what brand you prefer, what fuel usage you're after, etc. With 20k for a used car, you can get some fairly recent cars.

    As for your questions;

Basically I was wondering where I should look?
Carsales is a start. You can narrow your search with your ideal specifications.

What to do before and after e.g. checking their rego or inspecting the car?
If you're buying it privately, a revs check is necessary. Don't want to buy something that is stolen or worse. As for inspecting the car, before you go to see the vehicle, do a quick google search of the car. You'll find others who post on forums of all the issues that particular model has. Best way to check for issues.

Where to search for more info?
Carsales should give detailed information of the car.

    Price ranges?
After looking at carsales, you should be able to see a relative price point for the car.

    What to be careful of?
Don't be too hasty to buy a car. If the dealership offers you an "amazing" buy, try to see if other dealerships can do the same.
