My Hp g6 series laptop battery has gone bust as it's not charging anymore and I only have 57% life left, everyday week it goes down a couple of % points so I need to look at getting a new battery. Where and which battery should I go for do you think?
Yeah I can test that though right taking the battery out and have just power in, and if it still goes then it's battery right?
Not necessarily, often it will still run off AC power but not charge the battery, even if you try a different battery. Based on my experience I'd say 75% chance its that, and 25% chance its the battery. Sorry :(
See if a mate has a similar laptop with the same battery and see if you can try it, save buying a new battery for nothing.
I found some troubleshooting instructions provided by a HP technician on the support forums, please either try following some of the instructions given or create your own thread.

Reading the thread, this sounds like a common problem that afflicted the G6 series. You may be able to perform some diagnostics on the battery itself using the HP battery testing tool.
Yeah says replace battery
I purchased a replacement Asus laptop battery from dealextreme for <U$30 last year. Performance is as good as when the laptop was new. Much cheaper than replacement battery purchased locally.
I've got an old Dell laptop that show's the battery should be replaced, but I can't be bothered buying a battery because I'm not 100% sure it will still hold the charge, so would it be worth buying a battery for quite a bit of money (think it costs at least $45) and then only to find out it's not gonna last that long anyways.?
A new battery will last as long as a new battery, regardless of how old the laptop is.
you can usually get new batteries off ebay for around $35-$50, just get the full model number of the laptop, punch it into ebay with the word battery and you'll be laughing.
However it may not be the battery, it may be the charging port, which is what happened to mine… pain in the ass.
