Melbourne - UK (London or Manchester) cheap flights (AUG-SEPT)

Hi guys,
I am planning a trip back home to manchester for a friends wedding mid/late august ( and am planning on staying for about a month until mid/late september
any tips on finding cheap flights?
preferably i would like to stop off somewhere on the way there or way back (maybe tokyo) for 3-4 days as it seems like a waste to travel all that way and not see somewhere new while i'm at it.

any help appreciated.

sorry for the vagueness, if you need extra details please ask

I comment on too many of these posts haha

    My recommendation is..
AirAsia to Kuala Lumpur then Malaysia Airlines to London Heathrow.
Theres quite a lot of cheap dates around when you want to go at the moment but generally the cheapest is..

$199 for the Mel > KUL with Airasia on the 10th-15th of August
$939 for KUL > LHR > KUL with Malaysia airlines from the 14th of August to the 18th of September.
$147 for KUL > MEL with Airasia on the 17th-29th of September.

You could add a cheap Airasia airfare from KL to anywhere in asia to see more places.

So basically that would cost you $1285 + baggage on the airasia flights.

  • thats an awesome price thanks. defintely thinking tokyo for my mini trip somewhere, and thinking on going on the way back as it's later in the year and i heard tokyo can be unbearable with the humidity in august time.

  • I'm doing the exact same trip but about 3 weeks later. Having a few days of stopovers on the way too

    My trick is to do the following using www.kayak.com.au using the multi city option;

    Split the flights into half.

I.e Australia to Asia return, then Asia to Europe return

    For my example I did

Sydney to HK, Phuket to Sydney with Malaysian Airways
HK to London, Paris to Phuket with Ethiad

Ended up paying around $1700 all up for those, with all being direct flights with no long layovers with major carriers.

    Hope that helps!

  • update:
i'm not bothering with stopover now as too much hassle.

    dates are now 20th aug - 17th sept MELB-MANCHESTER

air asia are still doing the really good fares to kuala lumpur… $348 return for those dates , now i just need flights from kuala lumpur to manchester return.

quick question. if i do it this way, how long minimum would i need in transition time between flights? and would i need to go all the way through immigration, baggage collection, re-enter through departures and check in again? stupid question probably but never booked flights this way before.

Air Asia flies to/from KLIA 2. So you would need to pass through immigration, collect your luggage, head to the KLIA Express (train), catch it to KLIA, hop of the train, then check-in at KLIA NOT KLIA 2. This could take anywhere between 1.5 - 3 hours depending on where your arrival gate is, immigration queues, etc.

      • that's a really useful info, thanks :)

  • Royal Brunei have some $1500 return flights on odd weeks Melbourne to London return. Not on week ends. Although sometimes Sunday is an option. Need to search.Make sure you search +/- 3 days for best choice.

Have a look at Finnair who have reasonable flights to Europe from Asian hubs.

E.g. From BKK to Vienna in economy on daytime flight and return from Dusseldorf to Helsinki and on to BKK in business is $1900.They fly on to Manchester on their Flybe airline. Royal Brunei fare is under $700 on Melbourne to BKK return. Their new dreamliner is so comfy.

Malaysia airlines have promo Mel to Phuket return this week end only if you wanted a stopover, and then go by LCC like Nok to BKk.
