Ubuntu dual monitor issue *Help*

Hi;

Any Linux gurus able to help?

I recently upgraded my ubuntu (Linux) from 12.04 LTS to the new 14.04LTS.

Everything was fine with the old version, but the new version doesnt like my dual monitors which worked fine previously. It wont allow me to resize the resolution and I have everything mirrored on both screens. Im getting dizzy here! LOL

Sometimes at the login screen I get the login on the left screen & just a background on the right (indicating its using the right settings), but usually it has duplicated screens. Its like its almost worked it out but then goes back to spitting the dummy.

The system also seems slower than previous but Im unsure if thats related to the video card issue or whetgher this version is more buggy than usual & I should just backtrack to 12.04LTS….if thats possible?

P.S. Im not an advbanced linux user but can work via terminal with directions ;)

Thanks in advance

Nigel.

  • I recently installed 14.04 LTS also but only have one monitor.

    Are all your screen display settings correct? There's a check box that says 'Mirror displays (Note: may limit resolution options)'. Presumably this should be unchecked to achieve what you're after.

    What type of graphics card do you have? if it's an Nvidia, you may want to look into installing the Nouveau drivers. Google will be of help with this.

    edit: Taking another look, it seems 14.04 LTS comes with Nouveau by default. You might want to look into using the proprietary Nvidia drivers.. assuming your graphics card is an Nvidia and your resolution/extended desktop issues are driver related. Something along the lines of this:

    • Yeah the Nouveau driver doesn't have very good multi monitor support, especially if they're different size/resolution like my setup.
      I use the NVidia Driver and it copes well although I can't for the life of me fix tearing in fast motion videos.

  • until very recently i ran ubuntu 11.04 and it supported dual monitors. support for it ended and i wanted to upgrade but i disliked the newer ubuntu gui so i switched to linux mint cinnamon 16 and it also supports multiple monitors out of the box.

    look at the monitor/display settings. surely there is an option for unmirroring them and setting one as primary/secondary.
