OzBargain Update 2 Oct 2007 - Negative Vote Revamped

Hi everyone.

It is a response to recent issues with negative votes. I have modified the code so casting a negative vote is now a 2 step process.

  1. Click on [-].
  2. Choose a reason, or fill in one.

Hopefully by adding an extra step will stop people from accidentally clicking on the negative vote button. Also it helps the original poster and the other members to know why it is not a good bargain.

However a one-line comment is never as good as a full explanation with links to where else is cheaper, so it is also a good idea to follow up a vote with a proper explanation.

Another change is with the comments — now a vote is displayed below the gravatar, if the commentor has voted on this deal.

Please help me with some beta-testing. Thanks.

  • Just created a dummy deal here

It is obviously not a deal as it is far from the cheapest. So go in a vote against it!

  • Not working Scotty.

EDIT: The Negative Voting box comes up, but disappears.

  • Now it comes up & says "You have to be logged in to vote" - which I'm.

  • Obviously the first rollback is buggy :P Now please test it again :)

Edit: Another thing — there is some Javascript changes so a full reload is required if you are a regular here (Ctrl-R or F5).

  • nothing happend when i clicked on the negative vote

  • Works Now

  • I chose the "Cheapest Elsewhere" reason but it didn't show up in the vote page. Jeff's reason showed up though.

  • i did the same as john .. chose a message from the drop box and it dint show up .. seems like the typed reasons are working

  • Thank you guys. It seems to be an Internet Explorer specific issue. It should be fixed now.

  • It's still not there, or do I have to re-vote again?

  • It works! :) Thanks Scotty.

  • It's working.

Questions though; I selected "Spam" as reason, then decided to type in "'cos Scotty says so" …

1 - can you see the reasons for a negative?
2 - can we see the reasons?
3 - which reason was entered?

    Thanks!

    • The selection and the one you type in are supposed to be mutually exclusive.

The selection gives you a list of common reasons. It is for those who are too lazy to type in anything. It will be good to compile a list of common reasons why people put negative votes as well.

When you fill out a reason, it will be used instead of the section. When you click on "votes" tab at the top of the deal page (next to "view"), it will show you a list of people who have voted on this deal and their reasons (only applicable to negative votes).

  • The negative voting doesn't work with Safari, but works with Firefox.

Looks good, just need to explain sometime that people can check the negative votes, under the votes tab.

Or can a button be provided (only comes up with a negative vote count) which provides link to these.

    Great work

    • I have not tested it under Safari (nor Opera — anyone using it?). I'll try to get it working tonight.

  • Also somethings happened to the live feed. It's disappeared under safari

  • Actually I have just tested it under Safari and Safari works fine (Safari 3.0.2 under Windows). It could have been caching issue — maybe try to "Reset Cache" reload the Javascript? Which Safari version are you using?

  • Can I suggest that when it comes down as "cheaper elsewhere" you have the option to put in the url as well so ppl can find the bargains!

  • Was safari 3.02 Mac, Cant retest as it only lets me vote once - can you reset this or provide another beta - is that a gamma??

  • all ok here. Found another "victim" to trial the negative vote on. - sorry should say a deal that deserved the negative vote. Works fine with Safari 3.02. While i will be very judicious in the use of a negative vote, this new feature is very helpful in those circumstances

    Thanks Scotty

  • I'm using an older version of IE on this work computer and can't see the reasons.

  • I'm using firefox & in the middle of writing comment for reasons then the vote box just disappeared. Is there a time limit for this cuz as I notice I can't write long comment but short comment is working fine.

    • The generic popup box disappears a few seconds after the mouse cursor moved out from the box. I guess it might cause issue when you are putting in some comments. I'll take a look on getting it fixed. Meanwhile, you can make sure your mouse cursor stays inside the popup box while typing up the response.

  • No wonder! Scotty, no rush mate. I know the trick now :)
