American Airlines - Unpleasant surprise

This is just a matter of my surprise, but full service domestic airlines in the USA don't include baggage. I had to pay $25 to chuck my bag on a flight from Miami to New York. Annoying as hell when you don't expect it.

So unless you have airline status, expect to pay extra PER BAG within the continental USA.

Pretty sure has always been this way, whenever we are over there we try and book southwest airlines as they include 2 free checked bags per person.

  • If you book your domestic flights on the same ticket you will usually have the international carrier's baggage allowance included. It can be cheaper or it can be more expensive but always worth looking at considering the baggage fees of US airlines.

  • Agree with above. Try southwest airlines. I flew them 4 times a month ago in the US. Cheap, no frills, but you get 2 23kg bags includes for free, and i didn't have any issues or delays. They don't come up in expedia or other flight searches, you have to search and book through their website southwest.com

  • United, JetBlue, Delta are all the same.

At least they charge you $25 per bag at check in, and not some arbitrary $20 per kg charge which the budget airlines in Australia try to do if you don't pre-book baggage.

  • You shouldn't really chuck your bag. You might break something.

Don't go there in the first place. Rude & officious staff @ any American airport - no matter who you happen to be flying with. Totally disorganized with loud pretentious customers & staff ( & I don't mean us ). Customs are so military that you feel as if you are being taken to a prison when trying to do something as simple as going through the scanners to go to the lounge. Been there a number of times now with different airlines but always the same scenario. Has now put us off EVER visiting the country again.
