New car smell wanted

Anyone have any ideas to reclaim that new car smell in a car ??
i just bought a newish car[18,000km] but the dealer had 1 of those xmas tree thingies that smells shit of coconut & something else , not sure why they had it, maybe it was smoked in but there's no ash trays & no under current smell .
the sales guy reckons Superglue is close & said leave under seat for a few days LOL
I really cant say it would be from my lasting smells of it
I know there is a Supercheap spray called new car smell ,but it is shit also

find a person that gives the best fart - preferably of heavy heavy sulphar smell and that will clear all smells in the car
    Warning : Results may vary.

  • There is a "new leather fragrance" which are normally kept by dealers, I have not been able to locate it so far

  • Leave your windows down…i have read that smell is actually a sign not to breathe that air due to chemicals in the car plastics releasing.

I know what you mean about those artificial xmas tree shaped thingies(bought one from a servo once- never again)

I bought a ambi pur "new car" smell from woolies… it's quite nice smelling. It's like a black oval shape around a clear plastic inner circle where you see the liquid. Not sure if it's 100% the new car smell but it's nice.

I also bought a demo which had a strong smell when the fan was turned on. Took it back to the dealer and they flushed the whole system with some "cleaner" or freshener for free under warranty. Seemed to do the trick. Suggest you try getting them to do the same.

Failing that, I second the fart suggestion. :D

The irony of wanting that 'new car smell' back, is that you're actually looking to re-capture the smell from the complex cocktail of VOC's and other compounds that off-gas at high levels from plastics, foam, glue, and wiring, for the first 12 to 18 months after you purchase a new car.

A new car (much worse even than some formaldehyde-filled home environments) is one of the most toxic places most people ever breathe in for any length of time.

Beyond avoiding the usual 30%-and-then-some early depreciation, the most sensible reason to buy a slightly-less-than-new secondhand car.

Sorry, that was quite a rant (even for me), but I do still love people who buy new. Australia has a wonderfully buoyant secondhand market to choose from as a result.

    • I completely agree. New car is a toxic item. Even study has shown that it can cause respiratory problems…

      • but it smells soooooo goooooooood

Yes, but so does petrol, and I like that smell too.

Everytime you take a whiff and breathe in the benzene and other VOC's, you increase your risk of developing a whole spectrum of nasty cancers.
There are longitudinal studies that have led to the plotting of risk profiles that relate solely to how often people fill their petrol tanks, and hence, receive a keen exposure.

It's hard not to think about aboriginal kids who petrol-sniff, and others who get involved in various types of solvent abuse. Beyond brain-damage , cancer-wise longterm, they're screwed. Very sad.

          Slightly off-topic. Sorry.
          Was that another rant? Probably.

        • Man, I love the smell of petrol (well, not directly, but the smell of the petrol station while filling up).

As a kid, my dad used to buy and sell second hand furniture. I used to LOVE the smell of empty fridges/freezers. Can't even describe it - but it's not something you'd expect to find pleasant. I wonder what it is about fridges…

I can't quite relate to the 'Eau de Fridge' fondness.

I can actually remember as a kid being a little freaked out by the smell that came from the inside of a room-temperature one. Tended to hold my breath when I opened the door - just think I had an innate sense that breathing the air that came-out from therein was maybe not a great idea.
In retrospect, could have contributed to my interest in chemistry.

Ms.Turnip, I hereby dare you to start a forum post - with a poll included.
I am genuinely intrigued to know the percentage of people who enjoy a cheeky fridge-sniff and get excited by the prospect of new-fridge shopping.
          Don't deny it.

          I sense the makings of a support-group…

        • I had a feeling that making such a confession would be a bad idea lol

There may be many like you. $$ Yes, I'm starting to see actual dollar signs in a niche fridge-essence for OzBargainers to dab on their pulse-points.

Forget Katy, Kylie, Britney, and those other bloody mainstream celeb perfume offerings. Done and dusted.

A hitherto hidden market will now purchase 'Crisper' by Waterlogged Turnip.

          @WT: linky
Your dad's second-hand shop must have been like Aladdin's cave of wonders for the small child that you were:-)

  • If you insist on wanting that NEW CAR smell… They usually have that "SCENT FLAVOR" in those DIY CAR WASH stations… Located where the Vacuum cleaning part. $2 will get you i think 30sec or 60sec of spray i forgot. The station near me has the following scent. banana, cherry, new car, lemon.

  • ok points taken chaps :) i didn't know that , I just hate that smell—— I notice Dentists & some Dr's surgeries have similar wafting away
i'll check out the car wash thanks to all—— & those that add later

    • If you dislike the smell that is currently in there, strike a match in there. It will get rid of the smell.

Uh, needless to say, you don't leave it burning. lol

  • Shame they don't make a nice back of the Taxi scent…

    • C'mon, binge-drinking friends in Oz aren't exactly hard to find…
Some that I know would happily help out in putting that 'back of the taxi scent' in your car.
      Free of charge!

  • "Nilodor" spray mist deodoriser will make the car smell like it has just had a major service, i reckon the car service centres use it when you have a service.

    Car smells all fresh again.

  • Unpack a new vinyl shower curtain in the boot and leave it for a few days.

    Or, change the magic tree.
