What do you think of the Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0?

This the the latest versions of toy robots you can build from lego. I first saw it on the GC magazine in the top 100 must have items, and I'm thinking of getting this for my boyfriend's upcoming birthday.

But as it costs around 450AUD for this toy robot, I was wondering if anyone has this robot and if its actually worth forking out just for entertainment purposes? Also if anyone knows where I can get a great deal on this, as it is not a very well-stocked toy.

It apparently has light sensors, spatial and noise sensors, as well as colour sensors!

  • My younger brother got a Mindstorms kit a few years back (the Star Wars AT-AT) and he had a bit of fun with it. He's a programmer so making it do stuff was relatively easy for him.

Novelty wore off after a few months and now it just collects dust.

    • Thanks RandomNinja. I forgot to consider the 'novely' factor.. which in this case will definately wear off after a while.

have a look at this video. Covers the basics of mindstorms so you know what you're buying.

  • +1

DSE stores often stock LEGO mindstorms. The really big Toys'R'Us stores sometimes do. Myer no longer does. Current model mindstorms sets don't come on special when I'm watching.
I own both star wars lego mindstorms kits as well as the older mindstorms RCX set (the precursor to the NXT).
The RCX and the NXT sets are well beyond the star wars themed sets in terms of programming. (the star wars sets have a few built-in programs ranging from "go forward all the time" to "go forward then backward a few times, then stop"). The RCX and NXT sets are much more flexible and interesting if you want them to be.
The real beauty of "universal" lego sets like these are that you don't just get one robot in the box.
If he loves lego, then get this.
If he loved lego in the past, then definitely consider this.
If he loves robots but hates lego, then consider something along the lines of a prebuilt (or mostly prebuilt) robot instead.
You could follow it up with an NXT book from amazon for Christmas.

  • Great ideas. Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciate!
