Bear in mind that many drivers are unlicensed as commercial operators, so if something happens and you the payee are injured you may not be covered for any medical issues that arise from it.

you should be covered by medicare anyway

Something about a company that saves money on insurance by dumping the costs of its injured passengers on the taxpayer (i.e. us) doesn't sit right with me.

There is also the issue if tax as well, well the lack thereof paid by drivers earning an income from this unregulated service.

I know this is just a claim by me, but from eBay experience, not many semi regular income earners from this form generally declare coz it's so discrete.

But we don’t stop there – we want to ensure that riders, as well as members of the community, are as protected as possible. That’s why all ridesharing partners in Australia are also covered by up to US $5,000,000 contingent coverage for bodily injury and property damage to third parties by a large global insurer rated A+ by A.M. Best.

This means that if, in the event of an accident, a ridesharing partner’s own personal CTP or third party property insurance is exhausted or does not apply for any reason, passengers, pedestrians, other drivers, and the community at large can rest assured knowing that ridesharing partners remain covered by a robust first-class policy.

  • While we want to know about bargains, there’s another relevant point in their update to note about the service (Taxi, rather than private driver):

“Beginning Monday 2nd June, uberTAXI rides will incur a 5% Uber Service Fee.”

When Sydney’s taxis are scarce, or the trains aren’t running…

…Uber jack up their pricing. They have what's called "surge pricing", where they charge 3x-4x the normal rate when things are busy. There's a story here called "When a $65 cab ride costs $192":
    http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2014/01/24/265396928/when-a-6…

It looks like Uber are price dumping - taking profits made in the US, and selling rides below cost in Sydney - to drive taxi drivers broke. Once they've got enough taxi drivers out of the market, so that people have to use Uber, they'll jack up the prices in Sydney and use the massive profits made there to attack another city.

Still, cheap rides for a couple of months, eh?

I love uber, I love uberX. Have used uberX twice and it was fantastic.

Oh god do I hate taxies. I hate everything about their monopoly on a basic public service. I hate paying 10% to macquarie bank, via cabcharge, to use an eftpos card (ACCC how the hell is this not fixed yet!?!?). I hate getting out of cabs sick because they don't know how to drive properly, seriously how can you be so bad at something you do all day. Pro Tip For Cab Drivers: the accelerator has a gradual response, it's not an ON/OFF switch

I want UberX to succeed so bad, this industry needs a big shakeup.

I likeur pro tip, people need to learn to driver properly.

Hey negging people, I'd really love to hear why!

You wanna come out and defend the rent seeking taxi industry? Speak up then? Or sit there behind the anonymous neg button?

  • with a nearby driver who has passed both driving history and criminal record checks.

Just wondering - how does a business get access to criminal records, court records, and RMS records, in order to do such a check?

    • We fill in a criminal background check form that gives them permission to run the criminal background check. That's how.

  • We fill in a criminal background check form that gives them permission to run the criminal background check. That's how.

Yes, of course, I knew that an applicant would have to give permission. My question remains. Just how does a business, one that is not registered/licensed in any 'special' way (security industry etc.) get access to Police arrest records, criminal conviction records, RMS records of fines etc.

Are records in all states checked? What if someone came from Perth, fresh out of jail or whatever, and applied in NSW after getting a NSW driving license?

  • checks are national and are requested via a broker (listed here: http://goo.gl/a6vRVK) and carried out by http://www.crimtrac.gov.au.
